SGI Delivers New Media Commerce Solutions
AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS -- At IBC 2001, SGI (NYSE: SGI) will demonstrate new Media Commerce(TM) solutions that enable customers to create, manage, deliver and transact content over networks such as broadcast television, cable, satellite, VPNs or the Internet. From the SGI(TM) family of high-performance DMediaPro(TM) enhanced workstations for digital media, including the new Silicon Graphics(R) O2+(TM) visual workstation, to the MPEG-2 model of SGI Media Server(TM), the enterprise-level SGI(TM) StudioCentral(TM) Library 3.0 asset management system, Kasenna(TM) MediaBase Enterprise and Network Editions for SGI(TM) IRIX(R) OS-based servers and the SGI(TM) video-on-demand (VOD) platform with Thirdspace OVS, SGI leverages its strengths in the areas of content creation, content management and content delivery/transaction -- the foundation for its Media Commerce strategy. Content Creation The new SGI DMediaPro family of high-performance products makes advanced digital media functionality easy, accessible, versatile and powerful. Combined with software partners' applications, the SGI family of DMediaPro enhanced systems delivers the most complete range of products and price points for video editing, compositing, broadcast graphics, virtual sets, virtual characters and visual effects. Alias|Wavefront will demonstrate its Maya(R) Complete software on the Silicon Graphics Octane workstation while The electronic Farm will showcase Mule, its professional multi-role editing system on the new Silicon Graphics O2+ visual workstation for editing, effects, coloring and paint capabilities in the SGI stand. SGO's Jaleo software will be demonstrated on Silicon Graphics Octane2 with DMediaPro DM2. HD/Film Mastering In the HD/Film Mastering area of the stand, SGO Jaleo software will showcase the multistream HD compositing capabilities of the SGI Onyx 3000 series with DMediaPro DM3. SGI Digital Content Creation Customer Stage SGI technology is used worldwide for visual effects projects. For the past seven years, all of the Academy Award(R) finalists for Best Visual Effects were created using SGI systems. Setting itself apart from other video servers, SGI Media Server for broadcast takes advantage of the revolutionary distribute data, view video approach -- managing video as data and distributing the files at faster than real-time rates over data networks within a facility or between facilities. SGI Media Server will also be shown in the Pro-MPEG Forum Stand at IBC, demonstrating MFX and GFX capabilities. SGI StudioCentral Library 3.0 With more than 100 small to enterprise-size SGI StudioCentral Library installations already in place worldwide in the entertainment, education and government markets, SGI StudioCentral Library 3.0, launched at NAB, is the first digital asset management system for enterprise-wide deployment. SGI(TM) Total Performance (TP9400) Storage System This storage array is part of the SGI storage family of products that enable customers to manage the largest, most complex data and content management challenges with customized solutions designed specifically for massive scale and throughput. The SGI(TM) TP9400 storage system with the SGI(TM) CXFS(TM) clustered filesystem will serve as a broadcast SAN, uniquely enabling shared contribution for server editing along with protected broadcasting of content. CXFS with a TP9400 SAN allows for faster time to content creation and distribution by not having to move the data between systems in each step of the workflow process -- users share the same copy of the data over a fast data connection. Content Delivery/Transaction In the media streaming and VOD area of the stand, SGI will showcase its leadership in VOD and interactive television with a technology demonstration of a soon-to-be-announced SGI(TM) Origin(TM) family media streaming server and storage solution. The monitor tower will be serving 35 concurrent unicast streams of MPEG-2 video using Kasenna MediaBase.
