Quantum|ATL & ATTO Announce New Integrated FC Connectivity Option
IRVINE, CA -- Quantum|ATL, a subsidiary of Quantum Corp. (NYSE:DSS) and a leading supplier of intelligent tape automation products for networked computers, and ATTO Technology, Inc., a worldwide manufacturer of Fibre Channel and SCSI storage connectivity solutions, today announced the Prism FC310, a third-generation Fibre Channel-to-SCSI bridge integrated into certain currently shipping models of Quantum|ATL's high-performance, intelligent tape libraries. The new product is part of Quantum|ATL's Prism Storage Architecture(TM), a standard feature of most Quantum|ATL libraries that enables easy addition of system connectivity and feature options. The Prism FC310 is designed for the high throughput of Super DLTtape(TM) and LTO Ultrium(TM) tape drives and enables these new drives to be directly attached to a storage area network (SAN). According to Dataquest, SAN storage will grow from $1.3 billion in 1999 to $24.6 billion in 2001, with SANs projected to be the fastest growing segment of data storage. The FC310 provides universal connectivity to storage that is not server or platform centric and offers massive scalability by leveraging networking infrastructures. The FC310's Fibre Channel interface provides a simple method for connecting multiple servers to Quantum|ATL's P1000 and the M1500 scalable enterprise libraries. Using this new Prism Fibre Channel option for SAN connectivity avoids the need for large volumes of data to be transmitted at much slower speeds over the local area network. The new bridge connects to any kind of Fibre Channel topology: point-to-point, arbitrated loop or switched fabric. "This solution allows Quantum|ATL customers to continue to keep pace with Fibre Channel technology while cost-effectively improving the overall performance and scalability of their libraries over the long term," said Kevin Daly, president and CEO of Quantum|ATL. "An internal Fibre Channel router is an important feature for today's enterprise libraries." "By integrating our new Fibre Channel technology, Quantum|ATL customers will have a Fibre Channel bridge that is tightly coupled within the internal library architecture," said Timothy Klein, president and CEO of ATTO. "This allows the Prism FC310 to take part in high availability features while sharing a consolidated user interface and network management system with the rest of the library."
