SuperOnda Telecom Selects Zhone Technologies' MXK

LATAM telecom operator provides full fiber network with MXK and ZNID solutions

Zhone Technologies  has announced a full fiber deployment with SuperOnda Telecom, located in the city of Volta Redonda, Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. SuperOnda Telecom will use Zhone's MXK solution and 24xx ZNIDs to provide service to 3,000 homes in Volta Redonda. The telecom company is currently building fiber OSP to expand service to an additional 5,000 subscribers in 2014, and 7,000 subscribers in 2015.

Brazil closed the first quarter of 2013 with 96.5 million broadband accesses, according to Telebrasil. This is an increase of 37 percent in comparison to data collected in March 2012. Fixed broadband, in turn, had a total of 21 million accesses by March 2013. More than 2.4 million of those connections were activated within the last year. These growing statistics prove consumer demand is growing in the region, despite its current lack of affordable high speed access and wireless technologies.

In order to meet this growing demand for high speed broadband, SuperOnda Telecom is currently building 10G Ethernet Automatic Protection Switching (EAPS) rings with Zhone's MXK Chassis, using ZNID 2424 and 2426 to provide advanced services to business and residential customers in Volta Redonda. Zhone's solution will allow SuperOnda Telecom to upgrade its transport without a heavy investment in metro access equipment. The deployment will make SuperOnda Telecom the only provider in the city offering pure Fiber-To-The Home (FTTH) services, allowing the company to offer the fastest broadband speeds for its customers at affordable costs.

"SuperOnda Telecom chose Zhone's MXK solution to upgrade its equipment, allowing it to remain competitive within the telecommunications market in Brazil," said Jose Carlos da Costa Hungaro, chief executive officer at SuperOnda Telecom. "Zhone helped SuperOnda meet consumer demand by improving high speed access for its customers."

Zhone's MXK platform is a fully redundant, carrier-grade all-IP platform and the industry's first terabit access concentrator. Featuring industry-leading density, scalability and switching capacity, the MXK provides non-blocking capacity of up to 3,600 100 Mbps GPON subscribers or 360 1G Active Ethernet subscribers.

"SuperOnda Telecom selected Zhone to be its provider because Zhone offered many options for the company: products, support, stability and superior quality," explained Brian Caskey, chief marketing officer at Zhone Technologies. "Zhone's deployment with SuperOnda Telecom, following recent announcements with Ligue Telecom and Klisa Telecom, showcases continued broadband growth and expansion in the Latin American market."
