BlueArc Announces Agreement With Cray

Early Collaboration Yields Significant Joint Customer Deployments: BlueArc Corporation, a market leader in scalable, high-performance unified storage, today announced a reseller relationship with Cray. Under the relationship, Cray will resell BlueArc's Titan 2000 network storage systems to HPC customers worldwide and the companies will work together closely to coordinate sales and customer support activities. With its industry leading throughput and scalability, BlueArc's Titan 2000 series is an ideal complement to Cray's supercomputing platforms. BlueArc and Cray have already collaborated closely on several engagements in the previous year, successfully deploying joint solutions in EMEA and the Pacific Rim. The Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) of Aldermaston, Berkshire, England, was one of the first customers jointly engaged by Cray and BlueArc. AWE has played a crucial role in the defense of the United Kingdom for more than 50 years, providing the warheads for the country's nuclear deterrent. This work covers the entire life cycle of nuclear warheads -- from initial research and design, through development, manufacture and maintenance while in service, to decommissioning and disposal. AWE's work not only requires massive computational workloads, but also an extremely robust and tightly integrated storage solution. "The high performance, reliability and cross platform network access make the Titan systems an essential part of our storage strategy," said Mike Hawkins, Team Leader, UNIX Systems, AWE. "We are simulating extremely complex high-speed interactions. Cray and BlueArc have worked closely with our team to understand the details of our applications and develop a joint solution that meets our needs." AWE worked with Cray and BlueArc to build out an impressive computing and storage infrastructure that includes a 40 teraflop supercomputer from Cray and a storage solution consisting of two BlueArc Titan 2000 systems with more than 100 terabytes of disk storage. "Cray systems are designed to provide our customers with the scalability and high performance needed for their most challenging scientific and engineering applications," said Steve Scott, Cray chief technology officer. "As part of our Cray Advanced Storage Architecture (CASA), we have worked with BlueArc to bring to bear complementary storage technology and related services that will provide our customers with a comprehensive solution for both data computation and storage performance -- enabling them to make significant progress with their important research and product development efforts." "At BlueArc we are always looking for strong relationships that will help us make in-roads into new markets and capitalize on the industry leading performance and unique benefits of the Titan 2000 series," said Mike Gustafson, president and CEO of BlueArc. "Cray is a pioneer in the supercomputing industry and we're pleased to have had so much early success collaborating with such a well-respected leader. We're looking forward to continuing this relationship and expanding Titan's reach into new applications and customer environments with Cray." Joint Cray and BlueArc solutions are immediately available through the companies' sales organizations worldwide.
