Borland Enterprise Server Gets Highest Rating in Report on J2EE App Servers

SCOTTS VALLEY, CA -- Borland(R) Software Corporation (Nasdaq:BORL) today announced that Borland Enterprise Server 5.0 has emerged as the clear leader in a new report from CSIRO, one of the world's largest scientific research institutions. The report -- Evaluating J2EE(TM) Application Servers -- Version 2.1 -- evaluates six competing Java(TM) 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE(TM)) application servers including IBM(R) WebSphere(R), BEA(TM) WebLogic(R), SilverStream(R) Application Server, Fujitsu Interstage, and open source JBoss(TM). The products were evaluated against seven critical areas. Borland Enterprise Server 5.0 was found to be the leader in five of these seven areas and the clear leader overall. The areas where Borland leads are: -- Performance/scalability; -- Enterprise Java Bean (EJB(TM)) support; -- J2EE support; -- J2EE services; and -- Development/deployment. "This objective, comprehensive report shows Borland Enterprise Server 5.0 as the leading application server for J2EE deployments. It ranks Borland first in the majority of functional areas, including support for EJB, which are expected play an integral role in designing complex Web Services infrastructures," said Frank Slootman, senior vice president of software products, Borland Software Corporation. "According to Gartner, by 2005, the majority of J2EE application development will leverage EJBs in building complex, mission-critical and transaction-oriented solutions. These are exactly the kinds of applications that Borland Enterprise Server 5.0, with its exclusive application server partitioning and Web Services support, is designed to support low total cost of ownership. Anyone currently selecting a J2EE application server should consider the CSIRO report as required reading." "Our findings indicate that all application servers are not created equal. There are significant differences in functionality, performance, and scalability across all the products tested," said Dr. Jeffrey Gosper, senior research engineer at CSIRO and author of the CSIRO report. "Borland Enterprise Server 5.0 was found to be a leader in the majority of the critical areas that were evaluated." CSIRO is a government-funded body and provides impartial evaluation. For the report, Evaluating J2EE Application Servers -- Version 2.1, a level playing field was used for all products. This level playing field consisted of identical hardware, operating systems, databases and configurations, and code in all cases. Only the application servers were different, making direct comparisons straightforward. Borland places significant value on independent benchmarking and is the only company to provide a downloadable ECperf(TM) testing kit on its website. In this way, Borland invites its customers to do their own 'apples-to-apples' benchmarking. "We have always been very open and confident about the performance of our technology," said Frank Slootman.
