BIOBASE Starts 'BRENDA' Distribution

WOLFENBUTTEL, Germany -- The bioinformatics company BIOBASE, located in Lower Saxony, today announced the start-up of its exclusive, worldwide marketing of the enzyme database "BRENDA". BIOBASE, a provider of biological databases, thus expands its own product portfolio of databases in the field of gene regulation. "We are extremely proud that distribution of this scientific database has been transferred over to us," states Prof. Dr. Edgar Wingender, scientific managing director of BIOBASE. "This database fits very well with our own molecular biological database spectrum and enables us to offer concentrated knowledge from one source." BRENDA, "the digital lexicon of enzymes", contains information on 80,000 enzymes, which have been largely extracted by hand from scientific publications. A team of experts from enzymeta along with Prof. Dr. Schomburg (University of Cologne) maintains and develops the database. Based on its quality, the database was able to achieve a leading market position very quickly. Among its customers are numerous companies in Europe, the U.S., Australia and Japan. "This is another milestone in being able to offer our customers a growing, premium quality product portfolio. The joint use of BRENDA along with our own databases creates synergy potentials for the customer", states Michael Tysiak, CEO and commercial managing director of BIOBASE. "We received acceptance of our bid before the competition, since BIOBASE already has the scientific and technical potential and the worldwide distribution network for further increasing market penetration of the database."
