NCSA Position Notice: Technical Program Manager

Overview: The National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has one Technical Program Manager position available. The Technical Program Manager leads a group of professionals who are responsible for a specific set of technologies, services, and projects (hereafter called the group "workscope"). The Technical Program Manager recommends long-range strategic technical direction for the division, the directorate and for NCSA, establishes goals and timelines, and ensures that staff and resources are directed efficiently toward achieving these goals within the specified timelines. The Technical Program Manager also maintains key contacts both internal and external to NCSA (industry, government, and academia). Finally, the Technical Program Manager will still be required to perform technical duties. Key Responsibilities: - Understand and interpret technology directions for, and application of, the group's workscope, how they relate to NCSA direction, and how they relate to each other. - Develop and maintain a group technical strategy and direction that is consistent with NCSA's goals and objectives. - Perform technical hands on duties maintaining a working knowledge of technical implementation of work performed by the group. - Safeguard industrial, vendor, product, and operational information as well as comply with independent software vendor, industrial, and university legal requirements. - Analyze and summarize information and trends using reports, proposals, and presentations. - Identify, schedule, maintain, and coordinate workflow across multiple groups. - Interpret both NCSA and division directions and strategies for group members. - Work with group members to develop individual training plans, periodically review performance, and where possible map division members' skills and interests to group projects. - Actively pursue and maintain a continuing base of outside funding from government and industry, including selection of strategic opportunities and management of funded projects. - Actively represent NCSA and the group's workscope on the state, national and international level. - Work with colleagues at all levels within the division and directorate to set direction and facilitate the accomplishment of goals and objectives for the group. - Understand and interpret NCSA and university policy guidelines for group members. - Act on behalf of the Division Director as requested. - Other duties as assigned Required Education and Training: Bachelor's degree required in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field; Master's preferred. Alternate degree fields will be considered/accepted if accompanied by equivalent experience (depending on the nature and depth of experience as it relates to NCSA's current technologies) Project management in a complex work environment. Minimum of three years experience in the areas of computational science, research and analysis, or engineering in an academic, government, industrial, or national laboratory setting. This is an academic professional position at NCSA and is a 12-month, 100%-time appointment with regular University benefits. Salary commensurate with experience.
