Hydro Oil and Energy Leverages Scali Software

Scali today announced that Scali Manage has been selected by Hydro Oil and Energy to manage Norway’s most powerful Linux cluster. The cluster consists of five hundred Dell PowerEdge 1855 blade servers, with a total of 1,000 Pentium Xeon CPUs, and four Dell PowerEdge 2850 servers. With 7.6 Teraflops processing power (7.6 trillion floating point operations per second) this is the most powerful cluster in Norway. Hydro Oil and Energy will use Scali Manage to administer the growth and health of a cluster dedicated to processing vast amounts of seismic data. This type of analysis requires enormous data processing power as well as uptime and system reliability optimization. “Hydro has been using Scali software for various projects since 2001. In that five year period, they have used our software in challenging situations that have enabled us to demonstrate the strengths of our products,” said Bjørn Skare, president and CEO of Scali. “In seismic processing, unscheduled downtime and performance issues can lead to costly consequences. Scali Manage helps Hydro reduce this risk by providing the cluster management tools and support they need during the life of the cluster.” Tor Austenå, managing director of Dell Norway adds, “Linux clusters give unbeatable price performance benefits but many customers need to streamline the administration overhead associated with the complexities of clustering. With Scali Manage, Norsk Hydro is able to focus on what they do best instead of spending excess time administering the cluster.” Scali will be installing Scali Manage and the Red Hat Enterprise Linux operating system together with training and ongoing technical support. Five hundred PowerEdge 1855 bladeservers and four PowerEdge 2850 servers will be supplied by Dell Computer. Compagnie Générale de Géophysique (CGG), a leading supplier of geophysical products and services, is supplying their application GeoCluster for seismic data analysis.
