Gartner Dataquest Names Sun #1 in Worldwide UNIX Server Marketshare

SANTA CLARA, CA -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) demonstrated global acceptance of its Sun Fire(TM) server line in Q4 shipments and revenue, growing sequentially 70 and 77 percent respectively, according to Gartner Dataquest's Q4 Worldwide Server Database Report. The Sun Fire line, spanning from the low-end Sun Fire 280R and V880, to the midframe Sun Fire 3800-6800, and the high-end Sun Fire 15K continues to attract new customers such as Grupo Financiero Bital, Ocwen and Secretaria de Educacion Publica, who chose to run their IT infrastructure on Sun's binary-compatible servers. Sun holds the #1 UNIX® worldwide marketshare position in both revenue and shipments. In addition, Sun surged in UNIX/RISC WW server shipment market share in Q4 CY2001 gaining at the expense of the next two largest competitors. Sun's marketshare gained 2.8 percentage points sequentially to 58.1 percent, a substantial 38 points above its nearest competitor, while the second largest competitor declined by 1.1 percentage points and the third largest competitor declined by 1.8 percentage points. Sun also gained more than its two largest competitors in UNIX/RISC WW server revenue market share in Q4 CY2001. Sun gained 2.2 percentage points sequentially while the second largest competitor lost 3.8 percentage points and the third largest competitor gained 1.7 percentage points.
