Sun Chosen by Shaw Communications to Build Second Internet Data Center

SANTA CLARA, CA -- Shaw Communications, the largest provider of high-speed Internet service in Canada, has once again chosen Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) to build a second Internet Data Center. Sun was the provider of choice for Shaw's first Internet Data Center, successfully launched in August 2001. Shaw's purchase of Sun Enterprise(TM) 4500, 6500, 280R, 420R and Netra(TM) T1 servers, Sun StorEdge(TM) T3 arrays, Sun StorEdge FC Network Switches, the Solaris(TM) 8 Operating Environment, iPlanet(TM) e-commerce applications and Sun Professional Services, will help position Shaw for anticipated growth by providing superior performance, security and reliability to its customers. Shaw Communications provides nearly 3 million customers with broadband cable television, Internet and satellite services. Ranked one of the top two fastest providers of high-speed Internet services worldwide, as of October 30, 2001 by DSLReports.com, Shaw provides high-speed Internet access to roughly 650,000 Canadians. DSLReports.com is a do-it-yourself speed test site that rates more than 75 DSL and cable modem providers worldwide. In order to meet demand and continue providing customers with the best possible Internet experience, Shaw built its first Internet Data Center in 2001, with the assistance of Sun Professional Services, and powered by a full range of Sun Enterprise servers, the Solaris 8 Operating Environment, Sun StorEdge T3 arrays, Sun StorEdge FC Network Switches and iPlanet e-commerce applications. Drawing on its ISP implementation expertise, Sun Professional Services was able to reduce the implementation time for the Center by 50 percent, ensuring a quick, seamless transition to the new Shaw service. "Sun was able to offer something other providers were not able to deliver, an integrated solution, encompassing hardware, software and services, coupled with the ability to get our operations up to speed quickly," said Peter Bissonnette, President of Shaw Communications. "Sun's expertise, combined with its experience with ISP implementations, were key factors in our decision to work with Sun." The first Sun-powered Internet Data Center allowed Shaw to scale its operations to serve a large population of cable modem users, providing customers with greater reliability, performance and security. The results have been so impressive that customer satisfaction studies performed by CustomerCast named Shaw high-speed Internet service the number one service provider in its network. "We are happy to be expanding our relationship with a service provider like Shaw," said Everett Anstey, president, chairman and CEO of Sun Microsystems of Canada Inc. "We're committed to accelerating their success. The company is using Sun's full range of offerings as a competitive advantage. Sun's Professional Services and the unique uptime capabilities of our systems offerings are helping Shaw to architect an Internet Data Center that will provide the technology it needs to grow and the full redundancy its customers demand." Shaw is now preparing to build its second Internet Data Center, choosing Sun technology and Sun Professional Services once more for its best-of-breed solution. The new Internet Data Center will position Shaw for future growth, providing customers with next-generation Internet connectivity for set-top boxes and Internet appliances. The Data Center will also support Shaw's goal to provide high-speed Internet services to 1.2 million customers and 2.0 million email boxes by 2002. For more information visit www.sun.com
