Carnegie Mellon's Pradeep K. Khosla To Receive Lifetime Achievement Award From Engineering Society
Carnegie Mellon University's Pradeep K. Khosla will receive a lifetime achievement award today (Aug. 31) from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) at the 2009 Engineering Technical Conference in San Diego.
Khosla, dean of Carnegie Mellon's College of Engineering and founding director of Carnegie Mellon CyLab, is being recognized for his significant impact on the use of computers in engineering practice and education from the Computer and Information in Engineering Division of ASME.
"I am truly honored to be recognized by my peers for a lifetime of work that spans both research and curriculum innovations for our increasingly global campus," said Khosla, a University Professor and the Philip and Marsha Dowd Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He has been engineering dean since 2004.
Carnegie Mellon Executive Vice President and Provost Mark S. Kamlet praised Khosla for his tireless work and leadership in research and education initiatives.
"This award reflects the innovative energy and dedication Pradeep brings to his academic work as an outstanding educator and as a global leader in helping the university expand its borders," Kamlet said.
Khosla's global reach has helped the university develop important academic footholds in Europe, Asia and Africa.
A Carnegie Mellon alumnus and member of the engineering faculty since 1986, Khosla has invested enormous energy in the success of Carnegie Mellon and its engineering college and has demonstrated his leadership in research and education initiatives. He also is an internationally recognized authority on robotics, embedded systems, technology education, innovation and cybersecurity.
Prior to joining Carnegie Mellon, Khosla worked with Tata Consulting Engineers and Siemens in the area of real-time control. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, has received numerous awards and fellowships, and serves on boards of companies, nonprofits and venture capital firms. He is the author of three books and has contributed more than 350 articles to journals, conferences and books. Khosla is co-founder of Quantapoint Inc. and BiometricCore.
In 2008, Khosla was selected to join the prestigious Council on Competitiveness' newly formed effort to improve America's leadership in innovative technology.
Khosla received his bachelor's degree in technology from IIT (Kharagpur, India) in 1980 and his mater's degree and Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon in 1984 and 1986, respectively.
