RapidMind's Multi-Core Development Platform to Support AMD GPUs

With RapidMind, software organizations can harness the tremendous parallel processing power of these latest GPUs from ATI: RapidMind Inc. today announced that its flagship product, the RapidMind Multi-Core Development Platform, now supports the AMD FireStream 9170 and ATI Radeon HD 3870 graphics processor units (GPU) from AMD, enabling RapidMind platform users to automatically gain the benefits of the latest ATI technology without having to update their software. With RapidMind and the AMD FireStream 9170, developers can dramatically increase the performance of their applications. For example, performance improvements on financial algorithms have increased 27x when RapidMind’s platform is utilized. The AMD FireStream 9170 is the industry’s first double-precision floating point capable GPU, making it ideal for the most demanding compute intensive, data-parallel tasks, such as scientific computing, broadcast encoding, 3D visualization, and financial analytics. “With the FireStream 9170, AMD has raised the bar for accelerators, and RapidMind is uniquely suited to companies looking to leverage this performance,” said Ray DePaul, president and CEO of RapidMind. “To remain competitive, software organizations must continue to adopt the latest technology. With RapidMind, they can build applications to run on today’s fastest processors, knowing their software will automatically leverage the hardware innovations of tomorrow.” “AMD Stream embraces an open-systems approach to the GPU and is pleased to be working with RapidMind as we grow our ecosystem of software and service provider partners,” said Patricia Harrell, Director of AMD Stream Computing. “RapidMind’s Multi-Core Development Platform gives our customers a unique advantage for harnessing the compute capacity of the AMD FireStream 9170 as well as multi-core CPUs.” Developers of high performance computing and enterprise software are using RapidMind today to create manageable, single-threaded applications that leverage the full potential of multi-core processors from AMD and Intel and to seamlessly take advantage of the application acceleration available from GPUs and the Cell Broadband Engine. RapidMind will be demonstrating the RapidMind platform at the SIFMA Technology Management Conference & Exhibit in booth 1742 and in the AMD booth 2000, June 10-12, 2008 at the Hilton New York in New York City. Product availability and supported platforms Available now, the RapidMind platform offers Mac OS, Windows and Linux support for multi-core CPUs from AMD and Intel, and accelerators from ATI, IBM and NVIDIA. The AMD FireStream 9170 is scheduled for general availability in Q2 of 2008. The next version of the RapidMind platform with support for this card will be available in Q3 of 2008.
