DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION The Computer Sciences and Information Technologies Center at Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, Calif., seeks to enable the solution of national-security problems by researching, developing, and applying computer science and information technology. The Scalable Computing R&D Department maintains expertise in many aspects of high-performance computing, enabling departmental staff to conduct an integrated research program that addresses the interplay of hardware, middleware, and applications in modern computing environments. Particular areas of departmental expertise include lightweight operating systems, performance analysis tools, commodity-cluster software stacks, storage, component architectures for scientific computing, nonlinear optimization, flexible frameworks for solving partial differential equations, and computational chemistry. Customers include the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing (SciDAC) program, the Advanced Simulation and Computing program (ASC) under DOE’s National Nuclear Security Administration, the Laboratory Directed R&D program (LDRD), and other federal programs. The Scalable Computing R&D Department’s work is performed in close partnership with Sandia organizations at our New Mexico location. JOB DESCRIPTION We seek a manager for the Scalable Computing R&D Department. This individual will assume line management, as well as program management and development roles. The manager will be a champion for the technical relevance, excellence, and use of the department’s research. The manager will seek to maximize the impact of the department’s research portfolio and will develop new programs consistent with Sandia’s goals. A key aspect of the department’s success is the ability to recruit and retain highly qualified staff. Thus, the manager must develop broad contacts in the relevant scientific communities to ensure access to highly qualified candidates. The selected manager must also demonstrate a desire and ability to work in a team environment that includes the center’s management team, as well as managers and staff throughout Sandia. QUALIFICATIONS Qualified candidates must possess an advanced degree or equivalent experience in computer science, engineering, or a physical science. Other requirements include the following: (1) high-performance computing expertise, (2) successful R&D contributions in a multidisciplinary environment, (3) demonstrated project-management skills, and (4) demonstrated program leadership and active engagement in the computing community. Candidates must have strong interpersonal and communication skills and must be able to partner effectively and lead programs, both internal and external to their organizations. Desired qualifications include a Ph.D. in a technical field and familiarity with SciDAC, ASC, and LDRD. Past leadership in projects with research partners at universities, national laboratories, professional societies, and industry is also highly desirable. Candidate must be able to obtain a U.S. Department of Energy security clearance for this position. To obtain a security clearance, U.S. citizenship is required.
