Juniper names David Yen, Ph.D. executive vice president, emerging technologies
Juniper Networks today announced the appointment of David Yen, Ph.D. to the position of executive vice president, emerging technologies. Dr. Yen joins Juniper Networks from Sun Microsystems, Inc., where he served in a number of executive assignments over the course of his nearly 20 year tenure. Most recently, Dr. Yen served as executive vice president of the Microelectronics group at Sun overseeing the company’s developments in network, cryptography and high-performance computing. “It is with great delight that we welcome one of the industry’s most distinguished technology luminaries to the Juniper executive management team,” said Scott Kriens, chairman and chief executive officer, Juniper Networks Inc. “David’s depth of passion, determination and expertise in processor, system and software design, combined with his commitment to excellence in engineering, will prove invaluable to Juniper in the months and years ahead as we continue to advance the fundamentals and economics of high-performance networking,” added Pradeep Sindhu, Juniper’s vice chairman, chief technical officer and founder. As a member of the Juniper executive management team reporting directly to Scott Kriens, Dr. Yen will share insights as they relate to current technology initiatives, assemble a talented engineering team and lead the company’s emerging technology initiatives at the intersection of high-performance computing and networking. “I am excited to join Juniper just as the technology industry enters the early stages of a paradigm shift in the global information infrastructure,” said David Yen. “I look forward to working with teams across the company to define Juniper’s vision, architecture and open standards for a fully connected high-performance network that will ultimately enable us to maximize the power of global information systems.” Dr. Yen served in a broad range of executive assignments during his nearly 20 year tenure at Sun Microsystems, Inc. Most recently, Dr. Yen served as executive vice president of the Microelectronics group at Sun, the silicon and processor supplier to Sun’s Systems business and OEM customers around the globe. Prior to this role, Dr. Yen led Sun's storage group and served as vice president and general manager for its enterprise server business, executive vice president of processor and network products and executive vice president of scalable systems. Under Dr. Yen's leadership, Sun unified its microprocessors, enterprise systems and SPARC-based volume systems initiatives, and drove product development, strategy, marketing and overall business management. Prior to joining Sun Microsystems in 1988, Dr. Yen was co-founder and director of hardware development of Cydrome, Inc., a mini-supercomputer start-up. Prior to Cydrome, Dr. Yen served in engineering roles at IBM Research for manufacturing automation and TRW, Inc. for advanced processor development. Dr. Yen earned a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from National Taiwan University in 1973, received an M.S. and Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1980, and completed a General Management Program at Stanford Business School in 1993. Dr. Yen holds three U.S. Patents.
