IBM Tops in Server Hardware in 2008
IDC reported today that IBM was the top server vendor in 4Q08 with 36.3 percent factory revenue share, surpassing second-place HP which held 29.0 percent.
IBM also held the No. 1 spot for the full year 2008 with 31.9 percent factory revenue share compared to HP’s 29.5 percent. Highlights for IBM included:
- Leading the high-end of the server market for 4Q08 – machines that sell for at least $250,000 – with 63.5 percent factory revenue share compared to 16.5 percent for HP.
- In the Unix segment for 4Q08, IBM grew revenue by 4.7 percent as customers continued to rely on the company’s virtualization and consolidation technology to trim costs. IBM gained 4.8 points to finish with 46.2 percent factory revenue share versus 24.5 percent for HP. For the full year, IBM grew Unix factory revenue by 8.0 percent, according to IDC, and gained 3.4 points of share.
