Sun Java Real-Time System 2.0 Delivers Superior Predictability
Java Real-Time System 2.0 and Solaris 10 Operating System Enable Breakthrough Performance and Microsecond Processing Time: Sun Microsystems today announced the release of Sun Java Real-Time System 2.0 (Java RTS), a standards-based extension of the Java platform designed to help developers gain precise control over their Java software. This new release combines the power and scalability of the Solaris 10 Operating System (OS) with the flexibility of the Java platform to address a growing demand for predictable computing in industries such as aerospace, financial services and scientific research.
"Java RTS was originally designed to address the needs of traditional real-time developers in the industrial automation and robotics areas," said Rich Green, executive vice president of Software at Sun. "We quickly realized that the powerful combination of Java RTS with Solaris 10 is incredibly useful to any Java software developer who is concerned about software latency and work that must happen at a specific time. Java RTS helps enable developers to tackle the issue of achieving predictable responses to requests and thus create the truly deterministic systems needed for the financial, telecommunications and industrial automation sectors." Sun Java Real-Time System 2.0 Java RTS 2.0 is Sun's fully compliant implementation of the industry standard set of extensions for the Java platform. Java RTS helps developers to set process priorities according to their importance - something typically not supported in Java software applications. One of the key features of this new version is a very predictable method for recycling memory within Java software programs. Using this method, developers can determine how and when functions should be executed - down to a specific millisecond or less. Another key feature of Java RTS 2.0 is its ability to run on any of over 800 x86 and SPARC processor based platforms compatible with the Solaris 10 OS, as listed on the Solaris Hardware Compatibility List. Solaris 10 provides the necessary security, utilization and performance features that Java RTS requires to help meet demanding predictability requirements. More information and a detailed whitepaper on Java RTS 2.0 are available at: its Web site. NetBeans Module for Java RTS The available Java RTS NetBeans module adds real-time application development support for the NetBeans Integrated Development Environment (IDE). The Java RTS module for the NetBeans IDE enables development on systems (such as laptops) that do not have the Java RTS product installed. The module can build the code, then remotely deploy and run it on the target platform. This provides maximum flexibility for developers who wish to develop on a desktop or laptop and then run the code on a server. More information is available at its Web site.
