NERSC Division Director, Division: Laboratory Directorate

Computing is a tool as vital as experimentation and theory in solving the scientific challenges of the twenty-first century. NERSC (National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center) is the principal scientific computing facility for the Office of Science in the U.S. Department of Energy and a world leader in high performance computing. NERSC is located at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, California. NERSC's mission is to accelerate the pace of scientific discovery by providing high-performance computing, information, data, and communications services. Essential to the mission of NERSC is enabling computational science of scale, in which large, interdisciplinary teams of scientists attack fundamental problems in science and engineering that require massive calculations and have broad scientific and economic impacts. Examples of these problems include global climate modeling, combustion modeling, magnetic fusion, astrophysics, computational biology, genomics and many more. Reporting to the Laboratory Director, and in coordination with the Associate Laboratory Director for Computing Sciences, the NERSC Division Director is expected to contribute to and participate in the highest level of management of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). Introduction to Berkeley Lab: Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) is located in the San Francisco Bay Area on a 200-acre site in the hills above the University of California's Berkeley campus and is managed by the University of California for the U.S. Department of Energy. A leader in science and engineering research for 75 years, Berkeley Lab is the oldest of the U.S. Department of Energy's national laboratories. In addition to the intellectual and cultural advantages of being a member of the LBNL community, we offer employees in career and term appointments excellent terms and conditions of employment, outstanding health and welfare benefits, and programs for a secure retirement that are considered to be among the finest. More information about benefits can be found at its Web site. Duties The NERSC Division Director is expected to make substantial contributions to the formulation and direction of Laboratory programs and projects that enhance LBNL?s preeminence as a national laboratory. The NERSC Director should provide vision and leadership to establish and maintain the leading-edge computing capability accessible to scientists supporting the mission of the Department of Energy?s Office of Science. Provide for planning, organization, monitoring, and control functions for a group of over 70 staff members. Participate as a senior member of the Berkeley Lab Computing Science Area, and Lab-wide as a scientific division director in the creation and implementation of the LBNL vision for computational science at the lab. Collaborate with other scientific research projects at LBNL in the identification and resolution of cross-cutting problems that have Lab-wide impact. Specifically, develop, direct, and evaluate technological and architectural strategies to introduce appropriate new computational capabilities, broaden access, and improve usability for the NERSC Center. Establish and communicate NERSC Division policy, mission, goals, and accomplishments; develop initiatives and budgets and obtain funding (specific areas of current interest are technology scaling to the petascale level, and new technologies for increasing the energy efficiency of HPC platforms). Work directly with the user community and user advisory groups to ensure that the Center?s services, resources, and policies are responsive to their needs. Represent the Center internally and to external organizations and funding agencies; maintain a work environment that embraces diversity and fosters creativity and innovation; ensure that DOE and Laboratory rules and policies are observed. Qualifications Recognized national and international reputation as an authority on computational science, computer science, or applied mathematics. Demonstrated expertise in the use of scientific high performance computing applications. High level of technical accomplishment in high performance computing operations. Significant experience and demonstrated competence in the management of large-scale scientific projects. Experience with very large-scale computer centers employing advanced technology and serving hundreds of remote scientific users. Demonstrated leadership ability applicable to running a large, diverse, and team-oriented organization. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to interact at the highest level of management, both internally and externally. Ph.D. or equivalent education/experience in an area of computational science or computer science and an internationally recognized record of research accomplishments in that field. Notes Division Directors are appointed by and serve at the discretion of the Laboratory Director, and all such appointments are at will and may be terminated at any time with or without cause. This position is subject to the financial disclosure requirements of the California Political Reform Act of 1974. This position is designated as managerial within the meaning of the Higher Education Employer-Employee Relations Act (HEERA), Section 3562(e), Government Code, and incumbency in this position is excluded from coverage of the Act. How To Apply In addition to completing the on-line application process, submit a statement of interest in the position and a list of at least three references to NERSCDirector@eroom2.lbl.gov. Equal Employment Opportunity Berkeley Lab is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer committed to the development of a diverse workforce. 20110
