LIVERMORE LAB SCIENTISTS TO BENEFIT FROM FEDERAL AWARDS

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory researchers are to benefit from $60 million in federal funding from the Department of Energy's Office of Science over the next three to five years. Some 40 lab researchers working on 14 computational science projects in the department's laboratories and in universities will participate in projects awarded funding through the department's Scientific Discovery Through Advanced Computing program, which was created to foster multi-disciplinary research in areas relevant to the department's mission, according to Lawrence Livermore Lab. The program has already produced "significant new advances in astrophysics, particle accelerator design, climate, combustion, fusion and other fields," according to the laboratory. Research projects receiving funding include a climate modeling and climate science data management undertaking. In a statement, associate director for computation at the laboratory, Dona Crawford, said, "By tapping a broad range of expertise from top research institutions, SciDAC is helping to accelerate the state of the art in high-performance computing for the benefit of basic science as well as national and homeland security." Some 240 proposals were submitted for funding.
