Software Developer

JOB DESCRIPTION -- This position is in the Distributed and Grid Computing (DGC) group at TACC and will perform research, development, integration, deployment, and support of grid computing portals and portal software. This includes participating in, and potentially leading, research and development projects, assisting in the preparation of publications, presentations, and proposals, and collaborating with students and researchers using grid portals.The DGC group participates in a number of portal-related projects including UTGrid which is developing a grid for The University of Texas at Austin; the Texas Internet Grid for Research and Education (TIGRE) project, which is deploying a grid across Texas institutions; the TeraGrid, which is a national terascale cyber-infrastructure supporting diverse scientific domains. The group also develops a project called GridPort which is software used for building grid-enabled portals. This position will participate in TACC DGC activities in the following ways: • participating in the planning and architecting of portal projects; • architecting and developing new software for portals and preparing technical documentation describing the usage of this software; • integrating and packaging internally- and externally-developed grid portal software; and • deploying grid portals and supporting their use by local and remote users The candidate will be appointed to the UT title of Research Engineering/Scientist Associate I. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS The selected candidate must have the following minimum qualifications: • bachelor’s degree in computer science, information science, mathematics, or a computational science or engineering discipline; • two or more years experience in object oriented software design and development; • proficiency with common web application programming languages, tools, and protocols including Java, JSP, Servlets, XML, CSS, Javascript, HTML, Apache, Tomcat, Ant / Maven, etc; • experience working on collaborative projects; • excellent technical writing and presentation skills; and • excellent interpersonal communication skills and professional demeanor. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS The following qualifications are strongly desired: • two or more years of post-graduate experience in using and developing web applications; • advanced degree, especially in computer science or a science or engineering discipline; • experience in a research and development organization; • experience with Java portlets (JSR168) and/or Java portal frameworks (GridSphere, WebSphere, uPortal, etc); • experience with grid computing software (e.g. Globus, Condor, Unicore); and • experience with web service technologies (XML, SOAP, WSDL) INSTRUCTIONS TO APPLICANTS The University of Texas at Austin is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer and actively seeks women and minority applicants for this position.
