SBE Announces Industry's Highest Density Voice over Packet Gateway Engine

SBE Inc. (SBEI), a leading provider of high-performance IP-based networking solutions for next-generation storage and communications systems, today announced a scalable high-performance Voice over Packet (VoP) gateway module that delivers superior density on a single width PTMC (PCI Telecom Mezzanine Card) module. The dspPTMC-5561, along with the 6415 DSP module announced earlier this month, will be featured in the SBE booth (#541) at the VON Conference & Expo in Boston from September 19-22, 2005. The dspPTMC-5561 delivers up to 2304 premium carrier grade Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) channels to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and Telecom Equipment Manufacturers (TEMs) developing media gateway products such as access gateways, VoIP-enabled IP media subsystems (IMS), trunking gateways, and next generation switches based on AdvancedTCA (ATCA), CompactPCI (CPCI) or proprietary platforms. Central to the dspPTMC-5561 is a high-density DSP farm consisting of four, seven, or twelve Texas Instruments TNETV3010 DSPs to scale with T1, T3, or OC-3 interfaces. The TI DSPs are fully integrated with Telogy Software products to achieve true toll quality VoP services through a full implementation of carrier-class features, including G.165/G.168-2002 echo cancellation (up to 128 msec), comfort noise generation (CNG) with level control, wireless codecs with Voice Quality Enhancements (VQE), voice data compression, PCM support, carrier-class diagnostics, fax relay and low system latency. "SBE's new module will truly enable OEMs to develop best-in-class media gateway products," said Jerold Givens, Manager of TI's Communications Infrastructure DSP Product Group. "As the VoIP market continues to grow, service providers will demand small form factor, high density products. We are pleased that SBE has leveraged TI's hardware and software solution." The dspPTMC-5561 features a Wintegra WinPath Access Packet Processor to provide packet aggregation, processing and routing functions. Network packet formats supported by the WinPath include VoIP (UDP/IP) and VoATM (AAL2 or AAL5). The board also supports full TDM streams through the PICMG 2.15 PTMC interface (configuration 5). Additional data paths include Gigabit Ethernet for PICMG 2.16 (cPSB) compatible platforms, RMII and ATM (UTOPIA L1 or POS) interfaces. A 32-bit PCI bus interface allows Linux or other system software residing on the carrier board to control the dspPTMC-5561 module, and enable support for a wide range of third-party telephony and protocol software stacks, including SIP, H.323, MGCP, or Megaco. "The benefits of converting today's installed base of legacy telephone systems to IP gives rise to the significant demand for VoIP gateway-enabled solutions. According to a recent report by Infonetics Research, the worldwide market for carrier VoIP equipment is projected to grow to $5.7 billion by 2008," said Steve Nester, Vice President & General Manager, Embedded Business Unit, at SBE. "The dspPTMC-5561 arms system architects with the highest density solution requiring minimal space and cost per channel -- without sacrificing voice quality or performance. This full-featured module serves as a core element for enabling our OEM customers to build premier, carrier-grade VoIP gateway platforms offering maximum performance at a lower total cost of ownership," continued Nester. Building a VoIP Gateway on a Single Blade With the introduction of the dspPTMC-5561, SBE now provides all of the components necessary for system designers to build their own VoIP gateway on a blade using standards-based products. Bundling the dspPTMC-5561 with SBE's intelligent PICMG 2.16 CompactPCI I/O controller, HW400c/2, and its selection of wide area networking (WAN) interface cards, gives system designers full flexibility and control in molding a VoIP gateway solution that meets their unique application needs. Development Tools and Software Support The dspPTMC-5561 is supported with standard off-the-shelf development tools from Texas Instruments, including Telogy Software and Code Composer Studio. SBE offers Linux drivers and board support package source code, including peripheral drivers and host bus interface support.
