Industrial Affiliates Program Manager

The Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) at The University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin) is a leading research center for advanced computational research. TACC’s mission is to enhance the research and education programs of UT Austin and its partners through research, development, operation, and support of advanced computing technologies. To fulfill this mission, TACC provides high-end computing, visualization, data storage, networking resources, and support services to researchers at UT Austin and throughout Texas and the U.S. TACC technical staff also conduct research and development activities in computing system design/architecture, programming tools and environments, and algorithm and application design with the goal of enhancing the capabilities of researchers for knowledge discovery. JOB DESCRIPTION The Science and Technology Affiliates for Research (STAR) Program is TACC’s industrial partners program offering opportunities for private sector organizations to increase their effectiveness through the use of advanced computing technologies. The STAR program helps companies use advanced computing technologies to increase the effectiveness of their research and development activities and their overall business procedures. To achieve these goals, the STAR program offers companies access to high-end computing, visualization, storage, networking, and advanced software technologies, provides expert support and training in using these technologies, and offers opportunities for targeted development by TACC staff and for joint academic/industrial research. A successful STAR program will help companies, especially in Texas, become more profitable and successful, while also providing direct benefits for supporting and enhancing TACC’s R&D and technology resources. The STAR Program Manager is responsible for leadership, execution, and overall success of the STAR program, including program development, affiliate recruitment and relationship management, and measurement and evaluation. The program manager will provide vision and strategic leadership for the program, identifying and quantifying how companies can benefit in terms of productivity and efficiency from TACC’s leading R&D programs and advanced computing resources. The STAR Program manager will work with all of the TACC Leadership Team positions and with other TACC staff to address industrial requirements to enhance and expand the impact of the program for the affiliates and for the center. Therefore, the candidate must possess exceptional leadership qualities, project management expertise, customer relations skills, and an awareness of the use of information technologies in industry. This position reports to the TACC Manager of Development and External Relations. The primary responsibilities of the STAR Program Manager include: • work with the director and the leadership team to achieve TACC’s mission and vision through strategic planning and leadership of high-level projects; • planning and executing an industrial partners program that retains affiliates and increases membership; • identifying and securing affiliates and managing affiliate relationships; • collaborating with affiliates to understand requirements and deliver solutions; • driving complex projects that span disciplines; • designing, monitoring and reporting on the relationships between affiliates and internal staff; • working with TACC researchers and staff to insure seamless integration with program activities; • tracking success of the program and developing strategies for improving program activities and increasing membership at all program levels; • maintaining affiliate contact and organizational information in a database; • assisting in developing program-related press releases and communications collateral including program brochure, program Q&As, program reports; • working with the public affairs specialist to disseminate pr and program communications to local, state, and national communities; • developing and optimizing program-related web content; • setting an example of excellence in representing and enhancing TACC’s image and reputation through credibility, preparation, communication and delivery; and • performing related duties as assigned. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS The selected candidate must have the following minimum qualifications: • bachelor’s degree in business, computer science, information technology, engineering, or related discipline plus five years experience in managing large programs or projects in business development or marketing; • proven track record of creating and managing multiple public/private partnerships programs and achieving deadlines; • advanced ability to plan and proactively manage project financials/budgets, report progress as required both externally and internally, and ensure program objectives are met; • working knowledge of information technologies used in industry relevant to this program; • prior experience in building relationships and working directly with senior industry executives; • capacity to understand technical issues and help prioritize between center and affiliate needs; • excellent oral presentation and communications skills; • advanced ability to work independently under established deadlines and as part of a team; • ability to solve problems efficiently and within the guidelines of university policy; • high proficiency in Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Project and with communications tools such as Exchange and SharePoint; • ability to travel as required to affiliate sites; and • strong interest in science and technology. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS The following additional qualifications are strongly desired in candidates for this position: • master's degree, especially in business, law, or computer science plus more than five years industrial experience • more than five years working in business development or industrial partners programs within a related technology company; • proven technical understanding of high-performance computing systems, visualization systems, networking, and massive data storage; • negotiating skills and contracts experience relevant to maintaining, interpreting, and enforcing partnership/affiliate level agreements; • certified technical PMP with experience managing, training and developing staff.
