Manager Of Development & External Relations

The Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) at The University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin) is a leading research center for advanced computational research. TACC’s mission is to enhance the research and education programs of UT Austin and its partners through research, development, operation, and support of advanced computing technologies. To fulfill this mission, TACC provides high-end computing, visualization, data storage, networking resources, and support services to researchers at UT Austin and throughout Texas and the U.S. TACC technical staff also conduct research and development activities in computing system design/architecture, programming tools and environments, and algorithm and application design with the goal of enhancing the capabilities of researchers for knowledge discovery. JOB DESCRIPTION This Development & External Relations Manager will lead and manage a comprehensive, integrated program that promotes the activities and success of TACC, develops activities to strengthen center programs, and builds partnerships with other organizations. This position is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the activities of the following areas: Public Affairs and Events, Science Writing, Education & Outreach, Development, Industrial Affiliates, International Partnerships, and Web and Multimedia Design. The Development & External Relations Coordinator reports to the Director of TACC. The primary responsibilities of this leadership position at TACC are the following: • work with the director and the leadership team to achieve TACC’s mission and vision through strategic planning and leadership of high-level projects; • promote the usage of TACC resources for advanced computational research by other UT centers and departments; • initiate and manage TACC partnerships with UT academic centers and departments, other academic institutions, private sector companies, and government laboratories to initiate new research and development activities; • promote/publicize the capabilities and accomplishments of TACC to local, state, and national media sources to increase awareness of TACC as an excellent potential partner in computational research and development activities; • identify opportunities and develop proposals to companies, foundations, and government funding agencies to help grow TACC research and development activities and to acquire and deploy new computing technologies of value to TACC’s user community; • help initiate and organize workshops and conferences on technical topics related to TACC resources and on R&D activities of interest to TACC; • identify and formulate activities and projects that extend awareness and impact of TACC activities to new communities of potential users of advanced computing technologies; • design and manage the TACC public website to effectively portray the impact of TACC resources and research and development in the advanced computing community at the university and nationally; and • perform additional related tasks as needed. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS The selected candidate must have the following minimum qualifications: • master’s degree in a communications field (English, Journalism, etc.), Business, Law, or any computing-related field; • two or more years of experience in business development and/or fundraising; • participation in development of proposals seeking funding for research and/or infrastructure donations; • excellent oral and written communications skills, including expertise in interviewing, preparing and giving presentations, and negotiating; • expertise with personal computers and productivity software including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, and databases; • excellent project management skills and proficiency with project management software such as Microsoft Project; • ability to travel as required to affiliate sites; and • strong interest in science and technology. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS One or more of the following qualifications are strongly desired: • three or more years of experience in external relations and/or development in a university environment. • familiarity with supercomputing, scientific visualization, and computational science. • history of leading successful proposals for external funding and donations. • experience writing science outreach stories or technology-related press releases. • proficiency with graphics software such as Adobe PhotoShop and Macromedia Fireworks. • expertise in Web design/development. • experience hiring and mentoring student interns.
