SANTA CLARA, Calif. and DUBLIN, Calif. -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ:SUNW) and Sybase, Inc. (NYSE:SY) announced that the iForce(SM) Solution for Economical Data Management, based on their jointly developed Enterprise Data Warehouse Reference Architecture, was used in the development of TranStats, an analytical Web portal launched by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS). TranStats helps government and private sector researchers achieve new insight into U.S. Transportation information and enables the BTS to provide the public sector with fast and easy access to more than 100 transportation- related databases for detailed analysis. Introduced in September 2002, TranStats (www.transtats.bts.gov) supports BTS' goal of making data more accessible to the entire national transportation community, resulting in timelier, more informed decisions and, ultimately, better transportation systems. Information gathered by BTS is also used by federal agencies, including the Federal Highway Administration, Maritime Administration, Federal Railroad Administration, Federal Aviation Administration, Census Bureau and Bureau of Labor Statistics, as well as state departments of transportation, metropolitan planning organizations, universities, trade associations, the U.S. Congress, media, and the public at large. The iForce Solution for Economical Data management, which powers TransStats, is based upon Sybase's Adaptive Server(R)IQ(TM) enterprise analytical engine and Sun Fire(TM) V880 servers from Sun Microsystems Inc. In its public Web version, TranStats is currently supporting 15,000 visits per day and over 100 concurrent users. In addition, TranStats offers researchers unprecedented data access and analytical capabilities, including: -- A single point of access to more than 100 transportation-related databases from every mode of transportation -- a total of 2.5 terabytes of data -- with social and demographic datasets used in transportation analysis -- Selective download to enable users to choose variables of interest and download the data directly to a personal computer for analysis usingany database, spreadsheet, or statistical package, including Brio Software, Cognos, Microsoft, SAS, SPSS, and a custom Web portal interface using ASP, Java(TM), and XML technologies. -- Online data documentation with profiles on each database, summary information about the tables that comprise a database, data definitions and code information for data variables "Implementing TranStats with the iForce Solution -- Sun's Sun Fire V880 servers with Sybase Adaptive Server IQ -- has been a key to the success of this e-Government initiative, allowing citizens to penetrate the federal bureaucracy for data and information in a way that couldn't be done before," said Jeff Butler, assistant director, Bureau of Transportation Statistics' Office of Statistical Computing.
