Lucent and Sun Expand Alliance To Reach Enterprises

MURRAY HILL, N.J. and SANTA CLARA, Calif., -- Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) and Sun Microsystems, Inc. announced the global expansion of their long term strategic alliance to deliver comprehensive, reliable and scalable business solutions to wireline and wireless service providers and enterprise customers. The two companies will now work together in Asia, Europe and Latin America and have put in place sales resources and other operational practices to make the selling of solutions more efficient and effective for service providers. In turn, this joint effort allows service providers to accelerate the deployment of advanced services to their customers. This go-to-market initiative, which started in North America, is now in place on a global basis across all lines of business within both companies, and in cooperation with key channel partners. The Lucent and Sun teams are pursuing joint sales activities in the areas of IP Centrex central office solutions, customer relationship management, mobile high-speed data solutions and business continuity solutions. Working together under the new alliance model, Lucent and Sun have also provided customers with solutions to address their unified messaging, mobility infrastructure and network management software initiatives. "In today's telecom market, working with companies like Sun is another way we can deliver value for our customers. It's a go-to-market model that makes sense in the current environment and will work well into the future," said Patricia Russo, president and CEO of Lucent Technologies. "We're putting the full extent of Lucent's strength behind this effort, starting with the experience of our world-class sales and development teams." The companies, which previously focused primarily on joint product development, are now extending their expertise to creating joint customer engagement plans, services, and solution delivery for global customers. "With Lucent and Sun working together, customers have access to market-leading technology and solutions to enable enhanced services to consumers and enterprises," said Scott McNealy, chairman and CEO, Sun Microsystems, Inc. "Together we want to provide customers the maximum return on their IT investments, while helping to drive complexity out of managing and deploying network infrastructures." Lucent products, combined with Sun's network computing platform and services, including scalable, open standards-based systems and storage, the Solaris(TM) 9 Operating Environment, and the Sun(TM) ONE (Open Network Environment) for the development and delivery of Java(TM) Web services, create a highly reliable end-to-end service delivery solution. Carriers offering these solutions are able to provide enhanced services to their enterprise customers, driving consumption and traffic and creating demand on their networks, ultimately increasing revenues. Many industry-leading products from Lucent including the Flexent(R) Mobility Server (FMS) products, the Navis(TM) suite of multi-vendor Network Management Systems, including VitalNet(TM) and VitalQIP(TM) are based on Sun technologies, making collaboration simple and efficient and providing opportunities for joint customer initiatives. FMS uses Sun Netra(TM) cPCI servers and Netra High Availability suite, running on the robust Solaris 9 Operating Environment. Navis and Vitalnet/VitalQIP use the full Sun Enterprise(TM) server line from the Sun Fire(TM) v120 to Sun Fire 15K. "Our work with Sun is just one example of how Lucent is executing on its strategic initiative of teaming with alliance and channel partners around the world to reach new markets and customers," said Frank Farese, vice president, Global BusinessPartner Organization at Lucent. "We intend to use our success here to springboard to other opportunities and grow revenue in this part of our business." Several of the areas of focus include: messaging which revolves around Lucent's AnyPath(TM) Unified Communication platform, leveraging the Sun ONE Portal Server and the Sun ONE Portal Server: Mobile Access Pack; business continuity featuring the OptiStar(R) EdgeSwitch; the extended enterprise mobile offer which will provide high speed wireless data solutions for enterprise customers; and PacketIN(TM) Application Hosting Environment to provide converged voice, data and IP services.
