Sun Enhances Workload Management to Bring Advanced Capabilities to Sun Fire

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Becoming the first and only vendor to offer such sophisticated, mainframe-class workload management capabilities on a UNIX(R) server, Sun Microsystems, Inc. introduces Web-based Enterprise Management Dynamic Reconfiguration (WDR) on its Sun Fire(TM) Midframe and high-end 3800-15K servers. With the help of workload monitoring and measurement tools developed by BMC Software, Inc., such as PATROL(TM) for Sun Automated Dynamic Reconfiguration, WDR will allow customers to automate the changing of hardware resources to coincide with shifts in user demand. Sun's Dynamic Reconfiguration (DR) technology, which allows customers to add, remove and reallocate resources on-the-fly is unmatched in the industry. With today's announcement, Sun further improves on DR by introducing an application programming interface that takes advantage of Internet technologies to manage systems and networks throughout the enterprise. "Sun Fire servers are future-ready by design," said Clark Masters, executive vice president, Enterprise Systems Products, Sun Microsystems. "While most vendors are still catching up to Sun's original domain technology, we are marrying Dynamic Reconfiguration with the next generation of leading third-party resource and expert workload management software from BMC Software to offer our customers the highest level of automation available on a UNIX system." Because WDR is based on WBEM, the open industry standard for management of enterprise computing environments, Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) can easily link their applications to the technology. With its extensive experience and leadership in managing mission-critical platforms and applications, BMC Software will be the first to support WDR, offering its customers management capabilities akin to those found on the mainframe and, in turn, easing the migration for those who are considering the high-performance, scalable and cost-effective UNIX platform. "In the current environment of IT consolidation, customers require the capability to simply and seamlessly manage multiple applications on a single server," said Jeff Hawn, senior vice president, Operations, BMC Software. "Through the expert automation and reconfiguration capabilities found in our leading enterprise management solution PATROL, and through our relationship with Sun, we are lifting a huge burden off the shoulders of our customers -- giving them a level of automation never before seen in a UNIX server." BMC Software previously developed its PATROL for Sun Automated Dynamic Reconfiguration (ADR) solution allowing Sun customers to monitor system performance and proactively manage workloads on the Sun Enterprise(TM) 10000 server. Using PATROL for Sun ADR, customers reduce overall hardware costs while maintaining workload throughput under peak load conditions. Sun and BMC will be demonstrating WDR throughout the SunNetwork(SM) 2002 Conference, September 18-20. Registered attendees can view the demo at the BMC booth, P19. About SunNetwork 2002 The SunNetwork 2002 Conference and Pavilion is the only conference dedicated to showcasing end-to-end solutions from Sun and its partners that have revolutionized the Internet, networking and computing industries. SunNetwork 2002 has over 4,000 attendees at its inaugural event this week participating in over 100 technical sessions and bird of a feather sessions addressing Sun system architecture, network and computing management, services development tools and techniques. SunNetwork 2002 has been co-sponsored by SAP, Sybase, MatrixONE, PTC, Vignette and Jupiter Networks and has over 140 technology exhibits demonstrating how Sun's technology is solving real-world technology and network challenges.
