SANTA CLARA, Calif., Becoming the first and only vendor to offer such sophisticated, mainframe-class workload management capabilities on a UNIX(R) server, Sun Microsystems, Inc. introduces Web-based Enterprise Management Dynamic Reconfiguration (WDR) on its Sun Fire(TM) Midframe and high-end 3800-15K servers. With the help of workload monitoring and measurement tools developed by BMC Software, Inc., such as PATROL(TM) for Sun Automated Dynamic Reconfiguration, WDR will allow customers to automate the changing of hardware resources to coincide with shifts in user demand. Sun's Dynamic Reconfiguration (DR) technology, which allows customers to add, remove and reallocate resources on-the-fly is unmatched in the industry. With today's announcement, Sun further improves on DR by introducing an application programming interface that takes advantage of Internet technologies to manage systems and networks throughout the enterprise. "Sun Fire servers are future-ready by design," said Clark Masters, executive vice president, Enterprise Systems Products, Sun Microsystems. "While most vendors are still catching up to Sun's original domain technology, we are marrying Dynamic Reconfiguration with the next generation of leading third-party resource and expert workload management software from BMC Software to offer our customers the highest level of automation available on a UNIX system." Because WDR is based on WBEM, the open industry standard for management of enterprise computing environments, Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) can easily link their applications to the technology. With its extensive experience and leadership in managing mission-critical platforms and applications, BMC Software will be the first to support WDR, offering its customers management capabilities akin to those found on the mainframe and, in turn, easing the migration for those who are considering the high-performance, scalable and cost-effective UNIX platform. BMC Software previously developed its PATROL for Sun Automated Dynamic Reconfiguration (ADR) solution allowing Sun customers to monitor system performance and proactively manage workloads on the Sun Enterprise(TM) 10000 server. Using PATROL for Sun ADR, customers reduce overall hardware costs while maintaining workload throughput under peak load conditions.
