SANTA CLARA, CA -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) increased its lead as the world's top UNIX workstation vendor with 69 percent market share for global shipments and $255 million in global revenue according to Q2CY'02 results from analyst firm IDC. Sun captured significant revenue marketshare from HP, gaining nearly all of HP's eight percent quarter-over-quarter loss. In shipments, Sun increased its marketshare by nearly five percent over Q1CY'02, again outpacing all competitors combined. In the U.S. workstation market, Sun increased its market share in shipments to 72 percent, with four percent unit growth over Q1CY'02. In revenue terms, Sun also gained 13 percent quarter-over-quarter posting $120 million. "Sun's #1 share in the UNIX workstation market reflects the value customers place on its continued investment in price-leading high-performance workstations," said Kara Yokley, research manager in IDC's workstation program. "Its continued dedication to the UltraSPARC technology and Solaris Operating Environment resonates with its core technical audience. We expect Sun to continue to extend its share in the traditional workstation market." Sun's 64-bit workstations, from the sub-$1000 Sun Blade 100 system to the graphics powerhouse Sun Blade 2000 workstation, serve the needs of mission-critical computing customers in software development, electronic design automation (EDA), mechanical computer-aided engineering/design (MCAE/MCAD), scientific research, GIS and defense/government organizations.
