SAN JOSE, CA -- Cisco Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:CSCO), announced today that Schlumberger Limited (NYSE:SLB), has selected Cisco 12400 routers for the data infrastructure underpinning of its DeXa.Net Secure Private Network (SPN) service. Key services such as security and 10 Gigabits per second (Gbps) scalability with verifiable end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) were key factors in selecting Cisco. New Internet Protocol (IP) based network applications and services, such as voice over IP (VoIP), streaming audio and videoconferencing were driving the need for higher bandwidth, predictable performance and QoS within the Schlumberger corporate global data network. To fill this need, Schlumberger built its own Virtual Private Network (VPN) using Cisco routers. Today, it uses its global VPN, secured through the Schlumberger DeXa.Badge smart card access management solutions; to deliver value-added IT services to existing enterprise customers as well as to potential customers. "The data infrastructure component of our DeXa.Net service represents a new breed of global commercial network. We knew this network would have to provide scaleable high-speed connectivity with predictable performance, rapid service provisioning and selectable QoS levels, which is why we chose to work with Cisco," said Jean-Michel Rouylou, vice president, Connectivity Services, Schlumberger. "It was clear that Cisco understood not only our needs, but also the concept of maximizing the value of our network to deliver applications and services developed by Schlumberger to customers on a global basis. The Cisco 12400 routers provide 10 Gigabit per second scalability whereever we need it." To support its DeXa.Net service offerings, Schlumberger will use Cisco 12400 routers (www.cisco.com/go/12000) and Cisco 10 Gbps line cards that utilize industry-leading ASIC technology to perform line-rate Layer 3 functions such as IP unicast and multicast forwarding, MPLS switching/traffic engineering, IP load balancing and Quality of Service (QoS), giving it a carrier-class network. Advanced security applications include Access Control Lists (ACLs) for controlling access to the network, NetFlow to detect Denial of Service (DOS) attacks, and regulating the flow of traffic in a DOS attack through rate limiting (Committed Access Rate, or CAR).
