Edward Jones Increases Data Protection with EMC Networked Storage

HOPKINTON, MA -- EMC announced today that Edward Jones, the nation's seventh-largest securities firm, has purchased and is deploying 90 terabytes of EMC networked information storage, EMC software and EMC Global Services. The new EMC infrastructure will allow for rapid sharing and recovery of information across two data centers located hundreds of miles apart and make information accessible more quickly and more efficiently to its brokers and customers. Edward Jones considered the IBM Enterprise Storage Server and the Hitachi 9900 systems before deciding to deploy the EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems and EMC Connectrix Fibre Channel switch connected to IBM OS/390 mainframe computers, Sun Solaris servers and Compaq Windows NT servers. Edward Jones is implementing EMC SRDF (Symmetrix Remote Data Facility) over IP software to provide disaster recovery and continuous replication of data co-located at its primary data center in St. Louis and a new data center in Tempe, Ariz. Rich Malone, Edward Jones Chief Information Officer, said "We're adding one hundred new brokerage offices each month as we expand across the U.S., Canada and the U.K. EMC has the only storage solution that smoothly and efficiently scales to larger capacities, keeps our storage management costs to a minimum, and provides the outstanding data protection our business demands. The exceptional performance of EMC's high-density storage has made our business more productive by reducing the time it takes to execute our processing jobs — such as the creation of 3 million-plus customer statements each month — by as much as sixty percent." Edward Jones, based in St. Louis, Mo., has standardized on an EMC E-Infostructure for all of its major applications, including trading, operations support, data warehousing, Oracle, PeopleSoft, e-business, customer statements, imaging, optical and others. EMC's advancements in high-density disk technology have made it economically feasible for Edward Jones to accommodate the rapidly increasing storage capacities required by new applications. In addition to EMC SRDF over IP, Edward Jones is implementing numerous EMC management and storage software applications including TimeFinder, ControlCenter, ESN Manager, Symmetrix Optimizer, Resource View, Connectrix Manager, PowerPath, and InfoMover. Edward Jones also is relying on the full range of EMC Global Services for data migration, design, implementation, and project management expertise and services. "Our customer and product data are our most powerful assets," said Malone. "EMC's unmatched portfolio of robust software, and the virtually unlimited knowledge base among its customer support and technical consultants, have allowed us to make huge strides in protecting our information. The importance of safeguarding and efficiently managing our data is increasing dramatically as more people tap into our networks more frequently." EMC enables Edward Jones to do more with less "My staff raves about how the EMC tools make it so easy and straightforward to change and grow our storage infrastructure. We have not added a storage administrator to our staff in years. After the markets re-opened following the Sept. 11 tragedy, we experienced a surge in trade volumes unlike ever before. EMC was key to handling those record trading days and being able to deliver the quality of service our customers have always expected from Edward Jones." David Donatelli, EMC's Senior Vice President of Corporate Marketing and New Business Development, said, "Edward Jones is experiencing significant success in a tough industry climate because of its total commitment to customer service. EMC's smoothly integrated package of networked storage, software and services allows Edward Jones to more swiftly respond to its customers, reduce data management costs, and bring information protection to higher levels than previously possible."
