New time synchronization technology improves availability of IT services
Napatech today released new time synchronization features that will allow extremely accurate packet time stamping. This is important for measuring quality of service factors, such as latency, in packet networks.
Available on the latest Napatech intelligent network adapters for real-time network analysis, the time synchronization solution allows Napatech network adapters to be synchronized with a variety of time sources, such as Global Positioning System (GPS), IEEE 1588v2, CDMA and Pulse Per Second (PPS) sources. This allows packets to be time-stamped with an accuracy of 50 nanoseconds. The time synchronization solution also allows Napatech adapters to be daisy-chained allowing a single time synchronization source for multiple adapters.
“Accurate time stamps are critical for latency measurements. In financial trading, latency can mean not making your trade in time, resulting in millions or even billions in losses. For accurate time stamping you need effective time synchronization and Napatech now provides the most comprehensive solution with support for many of the major protocols and methods”, said Erik Norup, President Napatech Inc.
“Accurately stamping data packets is an essential element in monitoring networks and is business-critical in capital markets,” said Rik Turner, a senior analyst in the Financial Services Technology team at Ovum. “It’s no coincidence that generic network monitoring vendors and a slew of dedicated start-ups vie to take share in this most demanding of markets, and Napatech’s technology already underpins a number of their offerings. Napatech’s broad support for 3rd party PPS sources and increased precision should only confirm this position.”
Napatech intelligent adapters are ideal for OEM network appliance vendors in the network performance monitoring, test & measurement, security and optimization markets. For vendors, which require full 1 Gbps and 10 Gbps throughput, Napatech intelligent adapters provide a cost-effective solution with accurate time-stamping and full line-rate reception and transmission of data traffic with zero packet loss. Features such as advanced protocol and flow recognition, filtering and intelligent distribution of traffic processing on up to 32 CPU cores enable intelligent offload and acceleration of applications. An extensive software suite is provided for ease of integration supporting Linux, FreeBSD and Windows.
