SFI welcomes the recent decision by IBM to establish a ‘collaboratory’ with Irish Higher Education Institutions, in which IBM researchers will share skills and resources with university researchers to develop knowledge and skills relating to exascale stream computing. The “collaboratory” will enable IBM supercomputing and multidisciplinary researchers to work alongside SFI-supported researchers at the SFI CSET Centre for Telecommunications Value–Chain Research (CTVR) in Trinity College Dublin, the Photonics Systems Group at the Tyndall National Institute in Cork, and the Applied Optics Research Group at National University of Ireland Galway. The collaboration – which is supported by IDA Ireland – will benefit all parties involved, enabling them to share resources, experience and technical assets, to learn from each other, and to produce innovations more quickly. Commenting on the recent announcement, Prof. Frank Gannon, Director General, SFI said, “this agreement will see IBM supercomputing and multidisciplinary experts working directly with SFI-supported academic researchers. It is a clear demonstration with investing in high quality academic research can encourage additional investment by Multinational companies in Ireland.”
