Supermicro Releases 1U Itanium 2 Server

Supermicro has officially launched its highly anticipated 1U dual Intel Itanium(R)2 server solution, the SuperServer 6113M-8/i, to meet the ever-growing demands of the HPC server and large database segments. The 6113M-8/i includes the most sophisticated 1U dual Itanium 2 serverboard in a standard extended ATX formfactor: the SUPER i2DMR-8G2, and the equally impressive SC813 series chassis, specially optimized for Itanium 2-based solutions. "For 64-bit scientific applications, this product's performance is far superior to Xeon and AMD solutions," asserts Charles Liang, CEO of Supermicro. "With Intel's recent decision to lower Itanium pricing, we anticipate broad adoption of this true 64-bit platform." Compared to existing 2U Itanium servers in the market, the newly designed 1U SuperServer 6113M-8/i not only supports more hard drives and memory but also features a unique state-of-the-art cooling solution. For those who prefer a 2U solution, Supermicro produces the 2U SuperServer 6123M-8, which supports up to six hot-swap SCA drives. "Today's announcement by Supermicro is an important addition to the range of options for customers looking for Itanium 2-based solutions," said Lisa Graff, director of Intel's Itanium Group. "For users who need the best price/performance, yet want a standard 1U formfactor, this is good news!" Supermicro also plans to extend its Itanium 2-based technology leadership by rolling out its first line of dual Itanium 2-based blade servers in the first quarter of 2004. Many industry analysts see blade servers as the hottest segment of the server market, largely due to their flexibility, computing density and simplicity. Through its commitment to producing cost-effective Itanium 2-based blade servers, Supermicro will provide a whole new level of powerful blade servers accessible to a broad range of enterprises. Already the fastest growing server company in the world today, Supermicro continues to enhance and solidify its position as the world's technology leader in the high-end server segment. After all, this new ultra-dense SuperServer 6113M-8/i also deserves recognition as the world's most powerful high-density server! SuperServer 6113M-8/i Based on the E8870 chipset, the SuperServer 6113M-i/8 has been optimized for dual Itanium 2 processors up to 1.5GHz with 6MB L3 cache (6.4GB/s system bus speed) in a 1U rackmount formfactor. It features one P64H2 bridge controller and support for one 64-bit-133 MHz PCI-X slot and either four IDE devices (6113M-i) or four hot-swap SCA SCSI drives (6113M-8) in a 1U configuration, while the 2U SuperServer 6123M-8 supports up to three 64-bit 133MHz PCI-X slots and six hot-swap SCSI drives. This true 64-bit server also offers support for up to 16 GB of ECC registered DDR SDRAM in eight DIMM slots and dual Gigabit Ethernet ports for excellent networking capabilities. One scalable node controller and four memory repeater hubs are also included, making it an ideal choice for scientific computing and enterprise database applications.
