Former HP and Compaq Storage Executive To Join EMC
HOPKINTON, MA -- EMC Corporation, the world leader in information storage, today announced that Mark Lewis, a longtime storage executive and one of the industry's most widely recognized storage technologists, will join the company as Executive Vice President of New Ventures and Chief Technology Officer (CTO). Lewis will be responsible for helping to define EMC's technology vision and direction, playing a key role in the technical direction of merger & acquisition activity, and for managing new business opportunities such as the recently launched EMC Centera, the world's first content-addressed storage (CAS) solution. Lewis will report to Joe Tucci, EMC's President and CEO. In a separate news release, EMC today also announced the appointment of David Goulden as Executive Vice President of Global Marketing and Business Development. EMC also announced today that Jim Rothnie, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer since 2000 and a member of EMC's executive team since 1995, will retire from his day-to-day role and become CTO Emeritus, continuing to advise EMC on technology issues. Tucci said, "Recognizing new technologies and innovative ideas before the rest of the market has always been an EMC hallmark. Mark brings to EMC a broad range of talent and experience, from his days in engineering and product development at Digital to his work in helping Compaq recognize the importance of storage. We expect Mark to be a key player as EMC drives the most powerful shift our industry has ever seen — the growth and convergence of automated networked storage. With Mark's arrival and Jim's continuing role, our bench strength has never been stronger on the technology side." Lewis, 40, joins EMC from Hewlett-Packard, where he was most recently Vice President of Worldwide Marketing and Solutions for HP's Network Storage Solutions Group. Prior to HP's acquisition of Compaq, Lewis previously served as Vice President and General Manager of Compaq's Enterprise Storage Group, where he led the development of Compaq StorageWorks and built the foundation of Compaq's storage software offerings. Lewis joined Digital Equipment Corporation in 1984, where he helped lead the initial effort to develop the StorageWorks product line and launched new business ventures. Lewis holds a B.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of Colorado. Lewis also holds eight storage-related patents. Since joining EMC in 1995, Rothnie has made major contributions to the company's most significant and successful developments, including Enterprise Storage, Enterprise Storage Networks, and AutoIS (Automated Information Storage). Since 2001 he also has led the development team responsible for creating the world's first content-addressed storage solution, EMC Centera, introduced in April 2002. "Jim Rothnie is one the most respected leaders in the industry and within EMC," said Tucci. "We are incredibly fortunate to have his continued involvement and counsel as our CTO Emeritus."
