Ford Motor Company Secures Information with EMC
HOPKINTON, MA -- EMC Corporation announced today that the Ford Motor Company, the world's second largest automobile and truck maker, has implemented an advanced information protection system using EMC Enterprise Storage, EMC business continuity and management software and EMC Global Services to reduce the recovery time of hundreds of terabytes of business-critical information from days to hours. Ford chose EMC's information protection solution because of the reliability of EMC storage and software and EMC's years of experience in developing and implementing disaster recovery solutions in thousands of companies worldwide. EMC's advanced capabilities in remote data mirroring have allowed Ford to make information significantly more available on an everyday basis, protect data assets from disastrous consequences and dramatically reduce the time and labor to recover in the event of a disaster. Ford, headquartered in Dearborn, Michigan, uses EMC Symmetrix Data Remote Facility(SRDF) software to protect 260 terabytes of EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage supporting marketing, financial, manufacturing, product development and other applications in Ford's IBM mainframe environment. EMC provides more than 500 terabytes of EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage to Ford's mainframe and open systems environments worldwide. EMC Global Services organization works with Ford to implement and maintain its information storage infrastructure. Ford relies on SRDF and TimeFinder software to provide disaster recovery and replication services. SRDF software allows for continuous updating of mirrored copies of data stored on Symmetrix systems at two separate Ford data centers. Ford uses TimeFinder software to create synchronized views of its online production databases for disaster recovery testing. Together, SRDF and TimeFinder have allowed Ford to shrink data recovery times from days to hours, move from testing applications every 6 months to once a month, and eliminate human and software errors that previously resulted in missing or corrupted data. As part of its disaster recovery environment, Ford is rolling out EMC's SRDF Consistency Group software to provide a consistent view of data stored across multiple Symmetrix systems. Ford also is using EMC ControlCenter and CopyCross software to further improve information availability and manageability. "The challenge facing Ford and so many other companies is how to implement an information protection strategy for an information infrastructure that is constantly changing and expanding," said Frank Hauck, EMC's Executive Vice President of Customer Operations. "The reality is that it is not easy to do and the management of these installations has become increasingly complex. As Ford and more than 90 percent of companies that have pursued business continuance strategies worldwide have found, they can dramatically improve their data protection when they choose the seamless integration of EMC networked storage, advanced EMC software and EMC Global Services."
