Manager, Computing Services

The Manager of Computing Services at the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) will provide both technical and administrative direction of the IT area of TACC operations. The primary responsibilities of this position at TACC are the following:
  • Plans, organizes and schedules computing support projects, and assigns these tasks to appropriate IT personnel, including maintenance of the TACC website;
  • Develops cost, time and performance tables for various projects;
  • Establishes standards for work assignments and develops necessary guidelines and procedures for IT staff and oversees TACC staff ticket system for IT issues;
  • Evaluates employee performance and provides for development and training of the IT staff;
  • Consults with directors on the progress of work in the IT area and oversees networking issues;
  • Meets with other managers to coordinate the accomplishment of IT tasks;
  • Conducts training sessions for staff members on equipment, as well as various software applications; and
  • Interviews and hires new employees.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS The selected candidate must have the following minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree;
  • Four years of experience in a functional area of information technology and programming;
  • Experience performing Windows system administration tasks in a multi-vendor, advanced computing environment that includes state-of-the-art systems for high performance computing;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Experience with the following: Server operating systems – Windows 2003, Redhat Enterprise Linux, OS X Server; Active Directory; Exchange 2007;
  • Experience with Windows server configuration and administration that extends beyond day-to-day monitoring and maintenance activities;
  • Knowledge and experience with server hardware components and internals as well as server build and configuration experience;
  • Experience working in a multi-server environment is required with knowledge of clustering technologies and strategies; and
  • In-depth experience with Active Directory (AD) and Exchange is required with demonstrated knowledge and experience with AD and Exchange design and configuration architectures and strategies.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS One or more of the following qualifications are strongly desired:

  • Hands-on experience with or detailed knowledge of: DNS, LDAP, Nagios, Apache, NFS, Samba, Sendmail, Mailman, SSL/certificate management, and firewalls;
  • Three or more years of performing Windows system administration tasks in a multi-vendor, advanced computing environment;
  • Two or more years experience with the following: Server operating systems – Windows 2003, Redhat Enterprise Linux, OS X Server; Active Directory; Exchange 2007;
  • Two or more years experience with Windows server configuration and administration;
  • Knowledge of the broad scope of Network, Systems, and Information Security administration roles;
  • A strong understanding of common desktop operating systems;
  • Experience with software package management systems, patches, and software compilation;
  • Experience configuring Storage Area Networks (SAN), routers and switches;
  • Experience with concepts such as RAID, hardware diagnostics, backups, replication, failure & recovery procedures;
  • Experience providing technical support to computer users;
  • Experience with server and LAN administration; and
  • Web server software administration (Apache, Tomcat) including tuning, configuration, monitoring and evaluation.
