CESGA, ITC collaborate on research using El Supercomputador 'Finis Terrae'

The Supercomputing Center of Galicia, CESGA, and the Instituto Tecnologico de Canarias, ITC, through a partnership of scientific and technological development and exchange of experiences, cooperate on projects related to the use of supercomputing technology.

The overlap and complementary lines of business of both centers fostered this collaboration agreement, and will involve optimization of computing resources within the Spanish system of e-Science. The Canarian Government has created, in early 2009, a supercomputing center that will fulfill the needs of R & D groups of the Canary Islands, promoting their integration into networks and national and international consortia. This node, called Atlas, has also incorporated the Spanish Supercomputing Network. CESGA-ITC cooperation in this regard is of great interest because the agreement provides not only the use of shared computing resources but also the collaboration of researchers and technicians from both institutions on specific projects.

CESGA aims to promote, disseminate and compute-intensive services and advanced communications to communities and CSIC Galician researchers and companies or institutions upon request. CESGA has 16 years working with various players in the Spanish scientific and technological system.

The Canary Islands Institute of Technology promotes R&D in the areas of Biotechnology, Renewable Energy, Mechanical Engineering, Water and data processing and visualization, among others. These areas will benefit from access to extensive resources and compute-intensive supercomputing. It is oriented to the application of research to industrial and technological development, especially in areas like renewable energy, developing systems for the supply of electricity, heat / cold and hydrogen capable of operating in isolation from the mains supply, desalination water using renewable energy in remote areas, the study of the potential applications of microalgae, with development of processes, products and services in the area of Biotechnology, and the design and prototyping of mechanical prostheses and medical-health application in the field Mechanical Engineering, an area in which computer simulation is key to compete.

The Instituto Tecnologico de Canarias SA (ITC) is a public corporation created by the Canarian government whose activities fall within the fields of Research, Development and Innovation, all companies serving the Canary Islands.
