Sun Contributes Grid Engine Portal Technology to Open Source Grid Engine Project

LINUXWorld-Javitts Center--NY-- Sun Microsystems, Inc. today expands its commitment to the open development of grid computing technologies with the contribution of its Grid Engine Portal portlet technology to the open source Grid Engine Project. The portlet, which integrates Sun(tm) ONE Grid Engine software with Sun(tm) ONE Server Portal technology, helps enable commercial enterprises and research institutions to easily and securely access grid resources from virtually any location inside or outside the firewall. It can be particularly powerful in collaborative environments, providing remote team members, partners and suppliers with secure access to compute resources in a central grid. With more than 6,500 grids deployed since July 2000 based on Sun ONE Grid Engine software, Sun has been instrumental in making grid computing mainstream. Sun Releases Source Code for Job Applications Manager Prototype Further extending its commitment to the open source development of grid computing tools and technologies, Sun also announced the contribution of the source code for the Jini(tm) network technology-based Jobs Applications Manager (JAM) prototype to the Grid Engine Project. Developed in collaboration with the Swiss Center for Scientific Computing, JAM technology provides a tool kit for researchers and computer scientists to experiment and explore how Jini network technology coupled with distributed resource management tools, like Sun's Grid Engine software, can be implemented to help join multiple grids seamlessly into a virtualized set of resources. Providing a sample integration of Jini and grid technologies, Sun is demonstrating the potential synergies between the two technologies in delivering grid computing as a service and providing technical customers a tool kit which can be dissected and manipulated to work with their existing applications.
