Silicon Graphics to Pay $1.2 Million

Silicon Graphics Inc. said it will pay additional penalties of about $182,000 to settle charges by the Department of Commerce that the company sold computers to a Russian government laboratory without an export license. The graphics company disclosed the fine in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission Friday. The penalties are in addition to a $1 million fine announced last month to settle a Department of Justice investigation of the same matter, which is subject to court approval. The settlements resolve charges related to the sale of four deskside computers to a Russian government laboratory in 1996, for which Silicon Graphics failed to obtain an export license. Silicon Graphics, a Mountain View, Calif., a provider of graphics systems, said it doesn't believe the settlement payments will have a material financial impact on the company.
