Real-Time, HPC Applications Optimized on Marconi Networking

Marconi Corporation announced today its exhibition at the SC2003 Igniting Innovation conference, in Phoenix this year, with demonstrations that show how Marconi's high-performance networking platforms support users who require the ability to store and retrieve multimedia data over high-speed, secure links from anywhere in the world. Marconi's demonstrations will be exhibited in the Phoenix Civic Plaza at Booth # 1811, from Monday, Nov. 17 through Thursday, Nov. 20. The common element in high-performance computing, whether for defense and intelligence purposes or for scientific exploration, is the ability to access very large databases in as short a time as possible. People working in advanced communications require near real-time access to information, such as telemetry, high-definition video surveillance streams or large databases. Marconi's products, ranging from the 480 Gbps (Gigabits per second) BXR(TM)- 48000 multiservice switch-router to the 2.5 Gbps ASX(TM)-200BX, as well as the ViPr(TM) Virtual Presence System, provide the connection-oriented network and applications to transport data under such exacting standards. The demonstrations include showing how ViPr, which combines the best of video-conferencing and IP-based voice services to deliver DVD-quality video and CD-sharp sound, provides multimedia communications on an easy-to-use platform, either for desktops or for room-sized conferences. "Marconi's high-performance networking products and services provide our customers with the ability to store and retrieve data from any point in the world, using the fastest, most secure encryption technology available," said Gerry Kolosvary, president, Marconi Communications Federal. "Network-centric operations -- whether for civilian or defense, security or intelligence- related -- require networking technology that overcomes the compromises inherent in best-effort networks. Marconi has proven its ability to handle any type of data, including delay-sensitive real-time video and other sensor- gathered information. We deliver this rich mix of information to the desk-top or the front lines of decision-makers." Details of Marconi's High-Performance Computing Demonstrations Network-Based Physical Surveillance and Security: Patented solution shows how high-performance networking improves the security of the system itself as well as the economics and performance of all surveillance and security activities. Marconi shows how one network can provide uninterrupted transport for video and audio signals and alarm-monitoring, among other security applications. The demonstration will use real-time video monitoring of parts of the SC2003 show floor, including the ViPr Virtual Presence System, to show the ability to rapidly escalate supervision and response in the event of a crisis. The Marconi-designed graphical user interface and software enhancements automate the detection of intruders or suspicious items, helping security officers to stay alert and respond more quickly to security events. Because a connection-oriented broadband network can support any security application -- such as cameras, biometric scanning equipment, RFID access controls and others not yet in general use -- without experiencing the intermittent failures or regular upgrade requirements of simple, best-effort networks, organizations are able to realize a long-term return on their security and surveillance investment. Use of a Marconi broadband network also allows organizations to increase the return on their security infrastructure by re-selling additional telecommunications services such as telephony and Internet access to tenants at airports and office buildings. Multiservice Provisioning Platform Plus (MSPP+): Shows how Marconi's multiservice switch-routers, including the 480 Gbps BXR-48000, the BXR-5000 160 Gbps edge router and the ASX-4000M 40 Gbps aggregation platform, combine to create a highly-scalable, secure and reliable network infrastructure for the demanding requirements of real-time applications at the core or edge of a global information grid. Such requirements include the aggregation of lower- speed interfaces and support for the Layer 2 and Layer 3 services essential for applications such as supercomputing, multimedia and high-resolution imaging. Marconi's MSPP+ includes use of the ViPr Virtual Presence System for real-time multi-party video collaboration with simultaneous channels of streaming video on the same screen to help improve the speed and quality of command-level decision-making. Marconi's MSPP+ implementation also supports a full range of network security features as well as data encryption at 10 Gbps, the fastest speed at which information can be secured with commercially available technology. Distributed Storage Gateway: Demonstrates new ways to recover information in the event of catastrophes like the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center by showing Storage Area Network to Storage Area Network (SAN to SAN) connections at speeds up to 2.5 Gbps. Marconi's high-speed storage network provides a cost-effective solution that greatly increases the distance between storage sites for organizations that want to improve the security of applications such as storage mirroring, disaster recovery, operations continuance and cluster computing.
