TeraBurst and SGI Enable Collaborative Visual Area Networking Solutions
SALT LAKE CITY, Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) International TeraBurst Networks, Inc., and SGI (NYSE: SGI) today announced their intent to jointly market TeraBurst(TM) Wide Area Visualization Solution (WAVS(TM)) for real-time distance collaboration between visualization theaters, along with SGI's Visual Area Networking (VAN) initiative. Both firms desire to leverage their complementary market-leading computing and networking strengths to bring a real-time, high-bandwidth, multisite collaboration solution to the visualization market. "The TeraBurst WAVS solution fits nicely with the SGI Visual Area Networking initiative," said Greg Estes, vice president of SGI Corporate Marketing. "It delivers maximum image quality to single users and SGI Reality Center environments over high-bandwidth optical networks, complementing the low-bandwidth and collaborative visualization capabilities of OpenGL Vizserver. We are pleased to be working with TeraBurst to meet our customers' high-bandwidth visualization needs." "We are excited to be collaborating with an industry leader like SGI and feel that our alliance in bringing both solutions to market is an important step for TeraBurst," added Thomas Myers, founder and chief operating officer, TeraBurst Networks, Inc. "With our current successful customer demonstrations and trials, we believe our VAN and WAVS solutions are well poised to revolutionize the collaborative environment for industry professionals and researchers within the visualization market." TeraBurst's WAVS is designed to provide connectivity and real-time collaboration capability between geographically disparate locations by delivering high-resolution 3D display and video applications over optical networks. The solution combines TeraBurst's high-performance optical networking platform with its digital imaging and audio/video/data mapping technologies and is designed to interoperate with any graphics platform, any projection system and any software application. SGI's Visual Area Networking delivers universal access to advanced visualization. This concept allows creators and consumers of dynamic, interactive visual information to solve more complex problems and streamline their workflow by centralizing high-bandwidth data management and advanced visualization systems and using networking technologies to make it available to users throughout an organization. A combined WAVS and VAN solution would enable enterprises to bring together people, data and resources from multiple locations so that decisions can be made faster, more reliably and with greater efficiency than ever before. As part of their alliance, TeraBurst and SGI will offer a live demonstration of the WAVS solution at SEG. The WAVS solution's distance- collaboration capability will be demonstrated by an optical fiber connection between the SGI booth and the BP Center for Visualization at the University of Colorado booth (#1245).
