Most people normally buy Cat5e patch cables that are pre-made.  They measure the distances they have between their networking devices that they need to connect and they order the patch cables that bestsupports those distance.  Most patch cables made by a reputable manufacture are offered in numerous colors and sizes that vary from 1 foot to over 100 feet long.  So you have the flexibility to get the cable that perfectly fits your network application.  You do have this option when you choose to make your own patch cables.  If you are in the telecommunication industry or have a job where you are constantly in need ofcustom patch cables then you will have to invest in a crimping tool, a Cat5e cable stripper, and then buy bulk Cat5e cable, modular connectors, and the strain relief boots.  Making your own patch cables could become very tedious work especially if you need to make a lot of them!  So you will have to evaluate the cost of buying them pre-made versus making them on your own, and see what best you’re your needs.
