CA and Sun Collaborate to Extend Support for Solaris 10

Computer Associates International and Sun Microsystems today announced an expanded relationship under which CA will port Unicenter and BrightStor solutions to the Solaris 10 Operating System (OS) for x64 (x86, 64-bit) platforms. Leveraging the synergies between their respective solutions, CA and Sun are helping enterprise customers to optimize systems availability and performance, reduce ownership costs, and gain greater business value from their data center investments. With budget constraints remaining tight, IT organizations must continue to reduce data center TCO even as demands on their server and storage infrastructures continue to grow. CA's Unicenter solutions will exploit key features of the Solaris 10 OS, including Solaris Containers and Dynamic Tracing (DTrace) to optimize the effectiveness and efficiency of data center operations. Initially, CA will build a management platform for Sun's UltraSPARC and AMD Opteron processor-based systems running the Solaris 10 OS, based on its Unicenter and BrightStor product lines. Sun and CA have worked together to integrate Sun Management Center software, a key systems management product in Sun's N1 software portfolio, with Unicenter Network and Systems Management (NSM), so that Sun platforms can be managed effectively in heterogeneous environments through the Managed Command Center for Unicenter. "CA's management solutions and the Solaris OS are both key for the global IT infrastructure at EDS," said Keith Halbert, chief information officer, EDS. "Having these two strategic vendors expand their collaboration to streamline ownership of Solaris 10 assets is beneficial as we seek to maximize our customers' returns on their technology investments." CA and Sun have a long history of working together. Under the expanded relationship: - CA's Unicenter NSM will provide increased support, such as load balancing and diagnostics, for the Solaris 10 OS through Sun's unique Solaris Container capabilities. - Unicenter AutoSys Job Management will include support for scheduling applications running on the Solaris 10 OS for x86 platforms. - Unicenter Database Management Solutions for Oracle and DB2 UDB distributed databases running on the Solaris 10 OS will provide database performance management and administration capabilities. CA's Unicenter Database Management Solutions for Distributed RDBMS are also being certified on the Solaris 10 OS. - CA is extending support in BrightStor ARCserve Backup, BrightStor Storage Resource Manager and BrightStor SAN Manager for the Sun StorEdge 6130 system. All three products currently support the Solaris 10 OS and Sun StorEdge 6920 system. "Creating an IT infrastructure that is efficient, maximizes available resources and minimizes TCO is a significant challenge for most enterprises today. Sun and CA are delivering solutions that enable our joint customers to take advantage of the price/performance benefits of Sun's Sun Fire x64 servers and CA's widely adopted systems management solutions," said Steve Borcich, vice president, partner marketing, Sun Microsystems, Inc. "These solutions will further support the continued momentum we're seeing with 3 million Solaris 10 licenses, two-thirds of which are on x86/x64 platforms." "As the worldwide market leader in enterprise systems management, CA is committed to supporting Solaris 10, which is a strategic operating system for our customers," said Laura McCluer, vice president of strategic business alliances at CA. "Our continued focus on the evolving management requirements of Solaris users will enable enterprise IT organizations around the globe to optimize their service levels while tightly controlling their operational costs."
