SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. today highlighted a dozen of its hundreds of customers who, in the last 90 days, have chosen Sun to reduce costs and simplify their network computing environments. From global satellite giant Hughes Network Systems, to mid-sized businesses and educational institutions including World Book and University of Louisiana at Lafayette, to government customers such as the Federal Aviation Administration, to recreation and entertainment businesses such as Lodgian, companies in every industry throughout the world are purchasing Sun systems to reduce costs and achieve business goals. The entire family of Sun solutions -- open, scaleable and secure software, low-cost yet high-performance hardware, and industry-leading services -- enable customers' business and mission-critical systems to run smoothly. China Ministry of Railways China Ministry of Railways turned to Sun for assistance in building and deploying an application services platform for the company's three-way dispatching system. The customer will use the Java(TM) System Application Server, Standard Edition and the Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE(TM)) to run the dispatching system. China Ministry of Railways is also working with Sun(SM) Services to provide architectural and implementation assistance and training on the Java System and J2EE technologies. EPL, Inc. EPL, Inc. provides software solutions to credit unions. Wanting to lower its total cost of ownership and enhance its quality-of-service levels by consolidating all electronic communications on to one platform, EPL chose Sun Fire(TM) V880 and 280R servers, Sun Ray(TM) appliances, and Sun StorEdge(TM) 6320 systems to power Oracle9i Collaboration Suite applications. Hughes Network Systems Hughes Network Systems (HNS), a wholly owned subsidiary of Hughes Electronics Corporation, is the world's leading provider of broadband satellite network solutions for businesses and consumers, with more than 600,000 systems ordered or shipped to customers in 85 countries. HNS pioneered the development of high-speed satellite Internet access services, which it markets globally under the DIRECWAY brand. The company selected Sun to supply computer systems and software for the network operations center requirements of its new SPACEWAY satellite system. As part of the five-year multimillion dollar agreement, Sun will supply all of the core Solaris systems for the ground infrastructure of the program. The Sun solution for HNS' SPACEWAY includes technology consulting expertise and training from Sun Services that will help facilitate faster deployment and enhance overall quality. Lodgian Lodgian, a leading hotel owner and operator, worked with Sun to develop a high performing, highly available and scalable storage infrastructure. The company selected a Sun StorEdge 6320 disk storage system, a Sun StorEdge L100 tape library, a Sun Fire V480 server and SunSpectrum Platinum(SM) Services to meet its storage needs. Sun proved to Lodgian that the Sun StorEdge 6320 system could outperform EMC's Clarion 4700 series and won the deal due to Sun's ability to develop an end-to-end solution. Motorola (Polska) Needing to scale its storage capacity to accommodate burgeoning growth of its Krakow Software Center, Motorola (Polska) turned to Sun for assistance in migrating and consolidating its data to a Sun StorEdge 9970 system. Sun Services provided assistance with architecture design, implementation and project management. The Research Foundation of State University of New York The Research Foundation is a private, non-profit educational corporation managing and administering grants on behalf of researchers at 29 campuses of the State University of New York. Wanting to improve the performance of its Oracle applications, RF SUNY turned to Sun Services and Sun Finance for help in consolidating its server and storage environments. The solution included a Sun Fire 15K server and a Sun StorEdge 9980 system. Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research The Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research turned to Sun to reduce the cost, training and work required to establish its research infrastructure. Sun's Solaris(TM) OS (x86 Platform Edition) allowed them to minimize training and leverage low-cost hardware, enabling a large research project to get up and running with minimal time and staff. Swedbank Swedbank, one of the largest retail banks in the Nordic region, looked to Sun to help power its Net Trading applications and test environment. The bank now utilizes Sun Fire 4800 servers running the Solaris Operating System to run its loan application system and a Sun Fire 1280 server to power its Net Trading applications. Fourteen Sun Fire 240R servers running the Solaris Operating System were also purchased to run the bank's test environment. Sun Services support through SunSpectrum Platinum services support agreements help keep Swedbank's business and mission-critical systems running smoothly. University of Louisiana at Lafayette The University of Louisiana at Lafayette needed a low-cost system to incorporate into its compute farm and wanted one vendor to provide support for both hardware and software. Sun's Sun Fire V60x provided a complete solution to the University's compute farm with a system that is low in cost and provides one vendor for hardware and software support. The University plans to purchase another fifty systems in the coming months. The University's comfort level and confidence in Sun, as well as the low price of the systems, were the key factors in choosing Sun. University of New Brunswick The University of New Brunswick, the oldest English language university in Canada, chose Sun to provide a high-performance x86 computing cluster. Sun delivered a solution built on Sun Fire V60x, V65x, and V880 servers, Spectrum Support, Sun Storage, and open source tools and applications. Sun Services provides third party and backup solutions. Sun was selected over IBM, Dell and HP due to price/performance and its willingness to partner with the University for potential collaborative research.
