Sun Sets 2-Way World Record on Two-Tier SAP

Delivering on its promise to provide high-performance x86 systems for enterprise-level applications, Sun today announced that its Sun Fire(TM) V20z server has achieved a 2-way world record for the two-tier SAP® Sales and Distribution (SD) Standard Application Benchmark. The benchmark proves that the Sun Fire V20z server, based on AMD Opteron(TM) processors, outperforms comparable systems from HP, Fujitsu Siemens Computers, Dell and Hitachi configured with Xeon processors. The Sun Fire V20z server, which supports 32- and 64-bit computing, demonstrates the capability of running SAP applications faster with a 2-way world record for the two-tier SAP SD Standard Application Benchmark(1). The two-tier SAP SD Standard Application Benchmark is a performance test that is indicative of full business workloads with complete order, delivery and invoice processing. The benchmark also demonstrates the ability to run both the application and database software on a single system with high-performance, and represents the critical tasks performed in real-world e-business environments. The Sun Fire V20z server achieved the best 2-way, two-tier SAP SD Standard Application Benchmark result, surpassing results achieved by a comparable HP server configured with two Intel Xeon 3.2 GHz processors; a comparable Dell server configured with Intel Xeon 3.06 GHz processors by 41 percent; a comparable Fujitsu Siemens Computers server configured with Intel Xeon DP 3.06 GHz processors by 30 percent; and a comparable Hitachi Server configured with two Intel Xeon 3.20 GHz processors by 55 percent(2). Results referenced are current as of May 10, 2004. The benchmarks fully comply with the SAP Benchmark Council regulations and have been audited and certified by SAP AG. The dual-processor Sun Fire V20z server delivers high performance, reliability and scalability in a low-cost, ultra-dense, rack-optimized 1U form factor. The server offers OS choice, including the reliable and secure Solaris(TM) Operating System, Red Hat Linux or SUSE Linux, and is Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL) certified. In addition to the current benchmark achievement, Sun and SAP offer numerous programs and services for customers to see and experience the economic and performance benefits stemming from this alliance such as the Sun Excellence Center for SAP NetWeaver(TM), SAP's open integration and application platform, Sun-SAP iForce(SM) Centers, the Sun and SAP Joint Java Technology Center, and Sun's membership in the SAP LinuxLab. Since its inception in 1982, a singular vision -- "The Network Is The Computer(TM)" -- has propelled Sun Microsystems, Inc. to its position as a leading provider of industrial-strength hardware, software and services that make the Net work.
