Voltaire, a leading provider of high performance InfiniBand solutions, today announced InfiniBand solutions for Power Mac G5 Super Computers. Leveraging the world's fastest personal computer, Voltaire's InfiniBand solutions will enable advanced computing facilities at universities and in the industry to build powerful supercomputers using low cost, grid configurations instead of expensive mainframe systems and proprietary networking technologies. Voltaire's announcement follows the recent news from Virginia Tech University in November 2003 that it is using 1,100, 64-bit dual-processor Power Mac G5 computers and InfiniBand solutions to build one of the fastest supercomputers in the world. The cluster that is colloquially referred to as the "Big Mac" is expected to rank as the world's third-fastest supercomputer at 10.3 trillion operations per second. Voltaire has been working with Mellanox Technologies to develop InfiniBand technology to enable these solutions.
