Sun Microsystems, Inc. recognized Lehman Brothers, the global investment bank, for excellence in UNIX(R) systems engineering and IT innovation. Lehman Brothers has created the framework and implemented the technology to enable Sun's Solaris(TM) Live Upgrade software functionality to work more easily and seamlessly with third-party volume management software. In recognition of this innovation and to foster further cooperation between the two companies, Sun has awarded Lehman Brothers an undisclosed grant of products. Sun has also offered Lehman Brothers a seat at the prestigious Solaris Technical Advisory Board. "When we first learned about Lehman Brothers' framework during regular discussions with their IT engineering team, we were impressed by their depth of understanding and superlative technical skills," said John Loiacono, vice president, operating platforms group, Sun Microsystems. "Lehman Brothers has always been an innovator in global finance and they have been able to quickly solve this industry-wide issue. We'd like to formally acknowledge Lehman Brother's innovative spirit, and look forward to working with them in the future." "Uptime is crucial for financial services. The challenge is that system upgrades are often critical to stability, but often require extended maintenance windows and are risky to implement," said Bridget O'Connor, managing director and chief technology officer at Lehman Brothers. "The technology developed by Lehman Brothers enables such critical upgrades to be performed safely with minimal interruption to services, especially when paired with Solaris." The custom functionality, which was designed in-house by Lehman Brothers' IT staff, extends the Solaris Live Upgrade software feature to utilize alternative third-party storage volume management software, which can allow the company to make on-the-fly upgrades of third-party volume management software while the entire system is still in full production. Sun plans to have this feature available to the general public within the year.
