PACS Training Course Reaches 10K Milestone

The PACS (Partners for Advanced Computational Services) Alliance Training group announced today a milestone for their Introduction to MPI asynchronous, WebCT course. Since the course debuted in spring 2000, it has had more than 10,000 log-ins. “This tutorial was the PACS Training Group’s first asynchronous course, but you wouldn’t know it when you take it,” said PACS Lead, Leslie Southern. “It is an exceptional course that has gained respect from our peers and students all over the world.” The on-line tutorial, accessible from covers these topics: • Message Passing Fundamentals • Getting Started with MPI • MPI Program Structure • Point-to-Point Communication • Derived Datatypes • Collective Communications • Communicators • Virtual Topologies • Parallel I/O • Parallel Mathematical Libraries • Portability Issues • Program Performance • Parallel Algorithms Underlying MPI Implementations “The feedback from those who have taken the course has been overwhelmingly positive,” said Dr. David Ennis, Tutorial Lead. “Students have appreciated the high quality, convenience and the conciseness of the course.” Some students' comments about the tutorial include: "I liked the ability to take the class when I have time." "I thought the overview of material was very good." "Content was easy to follow...easy to understand..." "You can get a quick start rather than read through a book." “The web-based format is convenient & easily accessible. Your interface is very smoothly designed, with minimal obstacles.” The Introduction to MPI on-line tutorial was developed by PACS Alliance partners NCSA, Boston University, University of Kentucky, University of New Mexico, and OSC (Ohio Supercomputer Center). OSC’s David Ennis led the course development team.
