SDSC Announces 10th Annual Summer Institute for Science Researchers
The San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) announced that it will host its 10th Annual Summer Institute August 23 - 27, 2004. Held in the SDSC building at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and entitled "SDSC Summer Institute: Data Computing," the week-long program will provide researchers with an introduction to the concepts and tools available in established and new technologies for the creation, manipulation, dissemination and analysis of large datasets. "SDSC has a nationally known reputation for providing scientific researchers with a solid introduction to the benefits high-end computing," said Donald Frederick of SDSC's scientific computing services group and program training coordinator. "These lectures and 'hands-on' laboratory sessions led by experts from the SDSC's staff as well as other institutions are designed to introduce researchers to technology that can help them reach their goals faster and more efficiently." Topics* covered at "SDSC Summer Institute: Data Computing" will include: * An introduction to data-intensive computing * Designing databases for data-intensive computing * Introduction to data analysis and data mining tools * User interfaces for scientific data and data visualization * Building and using data collections * Web services for research data * Building ROCKS clusters * Case studies in data research projects including: * Protein Data Bank (PBD) * Cyber Infrastructure for Phylogenetic Research (CIPRes) * Encyclopedia of Life (EOL) * SDSC Biology Workbench * National Virtual Observatory (NVO) *Schedule is subject to change Interested parties can apply for the SDSC Summer Institute online at http://www.sdsc.edu/training/request.html.
