TACC Hires Barbara Fossum as Research & Development Programs Coordinator

Fossum to bring expertise in direction of programs—The Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) at The University of Texas at Austin announces the addition of Barbara Fossum as the new Research and Development Programs Coordinator. She was previously an Associate Program Director in the Division of Shared Cyberinfrastructure at the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Directorate for Computer and Information Sciences and Engineering. “Barb is an experienced, talented program manager and coordinator, with broad exposure to national programs combined with a strong technical background. Barb will be instrumental in helping TACC’s research and development activities achieve national impact in advanced computational research,” says Jay Boisseau, director of TACC. Fossum graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and was the creator and co-director of the Visualization, Imaging, and Media Laboratory at the Beckman Institute for Science and Technology at the University of Illinois. At NSF, Fossum coordinated the Information Technology Research Program for the SCI Division, which funds interdisciplinary research and educational projects. She organized review panels for more than 1,000 ITR proposals in all grant categories. Prior to NSF, Fossum was the research and high performance computing liaison between the NSF funded National Computational Science Alliance and the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, an academic consortium of twelve major teaching and research universities in the midwest working together to prototype an advanced computational infrastructure. At TACC, she will use her experience to develop collaborations for research and development and implementation of emerging technologies. Fossum says, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the team at TACC. They are a very talented and high energy group and I look forward to working with them to create new and exciting collaborations.”
