Sun Increases Developer Productivity and Network Computing Performance

SAN FRANCISCO -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. announced the availability of the Sun(TM) ONE Studio 8, Compiler Collection engineered to extend Sun's leadership in the creation of portable, native Solaris(TM) Operating System (OS) applications on SPARC(R) and x86 platforms. This announcement is part of a larger Sun effort to bring new levels of availability, security, manageability and value to the Network Computer. The Sun ONE Studio 8, Compiler Collection provides a set of core components to create and maintain C, C++, and Fortran applications, simplifying the tasks programmers perform most often in application development: editing, compiling, debugging, and tuning. The product is designed to help increase developer productivity by reducing application build times as well as increasing application performance by delivering faster run times. As measured on a Sun UltraSPARC(R) III based systems, Sun has observed an improved run-time performance for SPECint of 5.2 percent and SPECfp of 17 percent. This new release fully supports the latest open standards for core developer tools, including the C99 standard to match Solaris 10, OpenMP support allowing customers to take advantage of SPARC(R) SMP systems and support of common GCC and Microsoft extensions, thereby easing deployment on Solaris. The product builds on Sun's legacy of providing cost-effective tools to compile, build and debug reliable, scalable, high performance Solaris native applications.
