University of Alaska – Fairbanks Hosts Annual ESCC/Internet2 Summer Joint Techs, July 10-14, 2011

Just Two Weeks Left To Register for the Premier Technical Conference That Presents Latest Research in Advanced Internet Technologies

In just over two weeks, University of Alaska – Fairbanks will host some of the world’s leading Internet engineers for the Summer 2011 Joint Techs meeting held from July 10-14, 2011.  There is still time to register!  

Since 1998, the Joint Techs conference series, co-sponsored by the Department of Energy’s ESnet Site Coordinating Committee (ESCC) and Internet2, brings together networking experts from research institutions around the world for four days of in-depth discussions, workshops, tutorials, demonstrations and presentations. The conference addresses the most pressing challenges facing research and education networks, which serve the vast bandwidth needs of colleges and universities worldwide.

The Summer 2011 Joint Techs track session agenda will focus on three themes:

·      Campus Networking, with topics covering network performance challenges, cloud security, increased bandwidth needs of researchers, and virtualization – among others.
·      IPv6, with sessions covering issues relating to deployment and adoption of IPv6 on the campus.
·      Emerging Technologies, with topics including Cloud Computing, Network Testbeds and OpenFlow.
·      Other focus areas include:  Network Performance, Security and Mobility in the Environment.

In addition to the track sessions, tutorials are offered to provide more comprehensive hands-on training in areas of interest. There are three tutorials offered on July 10, 2011 including:

·      A half-day Eduroam Tutorial
·      A half-day Building a Data Transfer Node Tutorial  

A full-day MPLS Tutorial is offered on Saturday July 9, 2011

In conjunction with Joint Techs, Internet2 is offering two conference workshops, which include:

·      Network Performance WorkshopThis 1.5-day workshop trains attendees how to quickly identify and solve common host configuration and network performance problems. The workshop provides information on installing and using a variety of open-source performance tools, experience in interpreting the tool results, and introduction to methodologies for using a combination of tools to solve real-world problems. Workshop held from July 9 at 9am – July 10 at noon.
·      IPv6 Workshop: Over the course of this 2-day workshop, participants will design and set up a functioning IPv6 network, which will be connected to the Internet2 IPv6 Network and to the rest of the global IPv6 network. The network will have both external and internal routing configured and, using IPv6 transition tools, will also gateway to the global IPv4 Internet.  After completing this workshop, attendees will be able to engineer IPv6 networks within their campuses and explain IPv6 engineering concepts to peers. In some cases, they will also be able to help teach or facilitate future IPv6 workshops. Workshop held from July 13 at 1pm through July 15 at noon.
